Merzifon Amerikan Koleji'nin incelenmesi

Abstract

Çalışma kapsamında, yabancı ülkeler tarafından Türkiye'de yapılan eğitim yapıları incelenmiştir. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nda kapitülasyonların da etkisiyle yabancı devletlerin açtığı eğitim yapıları ve yürüttüğü eğitim faaliyetleri 18. ve 19. yy arasında büyük bir hız kazanmıştır. Yabancı ülkelerin Türk toprakları üzerinde yaptıkları bu eğitim yapılarından en önemli olanları kuşkusuz Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ne ait olan eğitim yapılarıdır. Bu yapıların sayısının 400'e ulaştığı çeşitli kaynaklarda belirtilmiştir. Hem sayıca çok olup çevrede yaşayan halkı etkilemesi hem de Türk Tarihi'nde önemli olaylara ev sahipliği yapması açısından bu eğitim yapılarının tarihi, kültürel ve sosyal anlamda belge niteliği taşıdığı düşünülmektedir. Amerikan okulları adı altında toplanan eğitim yapıları hemen hemen tüm Anadolu'ya yayılmıştır. Amerikan okulların bazıları günümüzde İstanbul, İzmir gibi büyük ve önemli şehirlerimizde hala varlıklarını sürdürmektedirler. Bu nedenle Anadolu'da yer alan Amerikan okulları incelenmiştir. Bu durum göz önüne alındığında tarihimizi etkileyen bu eğitim yapıların incelenmesi önem taşımaktadır. Karadeniz kıyılarımıza geçişi sağlayan ve bir köprü niteliğinde olan Merzifon şehri Amerikalılar tarafından büyük ilgi görmüştür. Tarihi çok eskilere dayanan şehir, nüfus yapısı ve konumu itibariyle Amerikan Koleji'nin kurulması için elverişli bir merkezdir. Şehirde 1800'lü yıllarda çalışmalara başlanmış ve 1860 yılında bir Amerikan Koleji kurulmuştur. Bu tarihten itibaren Merzifon, Amerikan Koleji'ne uzun yıllar ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Anadolu şehirlerinden birisi olan Merzifon zengin bir kültür mirasına sahiptir. Bu kültürel çeşitliliğin içerisinde bulunan Merzifon Amerikan Koleji bir kampüs niteliğindedir. Şehrin eğitim yapısı ve şehirde yürütülen sağlık çalışmaları Amerikan Koleji tarafından büyük ölçüde etkilenmiştir. Bu kolej eğitim faaliyetlerinin yanı sıra Kurtuluş Savaşı Dönemi'nde ve Cumhuriyet Dönemi'nde farklı fonksiyonlar yüklenerek uzun yıllar kullanılmıştır. Günümüzde ise Merzifon Amerikan Koleji, Anadolu Koleji adı altında Selanik'te eğitim çalışmalarına devam etmektedir. Geçmişe ışık tutan bu yapıların tarihinin geleceğe aktarılması ve Amerikan kolejlerinin ideolojilerinin anlaşılabilmesi için koruma çalışmalarının tüm yapıları kapsayacak şekilde yapılmaması bir sorun oluşturmaktadır. Bu yaklaşım doğrultusunda yapıların geçmiş durumlarının yansıtılması ve farklı kurumlar tarafından kullanılan bu yapıların ayrı yapılar olmadığı, Amerikan Koleji çatısı altında toplandığı açıkça belirtilmelidir. Çalışma bu kurumların amaçlarını ortaya koyacak şekilde; yürütülen faaliyetler, kurumların tarihi durumları, kullanım amaçları ve ideolojilerinin mimariye olan yansımaları ele alınarak yapılmıştır ve bütüncül bir koruma fikri öne sürmektedir.

In this study, directed by foreign countries education structures made in Turkey were examined. With the influence of surrenders in the Ottoman Empire, the educational structures opened by foreign states and the educational activities carried out accelerated between the 18th and 19th centuries. Surely, the educational structures that belong to the United States are the most important of these educational structures on the Turkish territory of foreign countries. It is stated in various sources that the number of these structures reached 400. These educational structures are considered to be historical, cultural, and social documents both in terms of their number and affecting the people living in the environment and hosting important events in Turkish History. Educational structures gathered under the name of American schools spread to almost all of Anatolia. Some of the American schools still exist in big and important cities such as Istanbul and Izmir. For this reason, the American schools in Anatolia were examined. Considering this situation, it is important to examine these educational structures that affect our history. Merzifon city, which is a bridge and provides a transition to our Black Sea coast, attracted great attention by the Americans. The city, which has a long history, is a suitable center for the establishment of the American College in terms of its population arrangement and location. Studies started in the city in the 1800s and an American College was founded in 1860. Since then, Merzifon has hosted the American College for many years. Merzifon, one of the Anatolian cities, has a rich cultural legacy. Merzifon American College, which is in this cultural diversity. The educational structure of the city and the health work carried out in the city was greatly affected by the American College. In addition to these college education activities, different functions and services were installed in the War of Independence and the Republic Period and were used for many years. Today, Merzifon American College continues its education in Thessaloniki under the name of Anadolu College. It is a problem that the history of these buildings, which shed light on the past, are transferred to the future and that conservation efforts are not carried out in a way to cover the ideology of American colleges. In line with this approach, it should be clearly stated that the past status of the buildings is reflected and that these structures used by different institutions are not separate structures but are gathered under the roof of American College. The study will reveal the aims of these institutions; the activities carried out were carried out by considering the historical situation of the institutions, their intended use and the reflections of their ideologies on architecture, and they suggest a holistic protection idea.
