Abstract
Purpose: Earthquakes have a vertical effect on structures, especially in regions close to the fault line. This effect can have different dimensions depending on the structure characteristics. In this study, the effect of structural characteristics on the behaviour of columns of structures under vertical earthquake effects is investigated. Study design/methodology/approach: A building model similar to the structure investigated in the field and considered to be subject to vertical earthquake action was constructed to investigate the changes in the internal forces of the structural elements caused by the vertical earthquake effect. The building was modelled with different number of storeys, different types of structural system and different building shapes using ETABS software and analysed under vertical earthquake effect. The internal forces in the columns of the structure are analysed. Findings: As a result of the study, it was observed that the axial load on the columns due to the vertical earthquake effect increased by up to 40% for the different types of structures considered. There was a negligible change in the values of shear force and moment. Originality/value: The knowledge about the changes in internal forces in structures caused by vertical earthquake motion is quite limited. In past earthquakes, it is known that the vertical component of the earthquake caused serious damages and collapses in structures. Therefore, it is important to investigate the extent to which vertical seismic effects affect the structural behaviour, especially in structures located close to fault lines.
