Reflection of Architectural Codes on Fashion Design in the Perspective of Interdisciplinary Design

Abstract

Architecture and fashion design are two disciplines that have common denominators in the context of the relationship between human and space. While architecture designs the spaces where people live, fashion designs the clothes that surround the human body. Both disciplines share basic design elements such as form, material and aesthetics. In this study, it is aimed for students to analyze the design codes of famous architectural structures and transform these codes into fashion products using artificial intelligence tools. In addition to transferring the original design codes of architectural structures into fashion products by using artificial intelligence tools, it is aimed to examine the interaction between architecture and fashion design and to develop an interdisciplinary design understanding by evaluating the products that emerge in this process. Within the scope of the workshop, the students first examined in detail the design components of the architectural structures they identified, such as form, structure, rhythm, ratio-proportion and material. In the second stage, the data obtained were entered into an artificial intelligence program to investigate how architectural design codes could be reflected in fashion products. In the next step, the participants made sketches, drawings and model trials to represent their thought processes for architecturally inspired clothing design. With the finalization of the clothing designs, a shoe painting activity was carried out to complement the clothes produced as the last stage, and the transfer of the original design codes of architectural structures to fashion products was discussed from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Thus, the participants had the opportunity to experience the design process with a holistic approach and to apply theoretical knowledge in practice. This practice not only offers a learning environment that emphasizes the importance of integrity and concept harmony in fashion design, but also introduces an innovative interdisciplinary pedagogy that bridges architecture, fashion, and artificial intelligence, thereby expanding the creative horizons of future designers
