The Short Stay Problem in Tourism Planning: An Analysis of the TR52 Regional Plan
The Short Stay Problem in Tourism Planning: An Analysis of the TR52 Regional Plan
Abstract
This study analyzes the positioning of Konya as a short-term stopover within the Cappadocia–Mediterranean tourism corridor in the TR52 Konya–Karaman Regional Plans, with a focus on the Mevlâna Museum. Designed as a qualitative methodology, the study employs thematic reading and spatial interpretive observation based on document analysis. The points of continuity, change, and strategic rupture were examined comparatively in the 2014–2023 and 2024–2028 plans. The findings reveal that, despite the strong attraction power of the Mevlana Museum, integrated destination scenarios capable of extending visitor length of stay have not been developed in either planning period. The museum’s surrounding area lacks experiential diversity and direction, therefore fails to link the museum area with alternative tourism potentials. Although urban regeneration pro- jects developed at the local scale are included in the plans, they are not linked to regional strategies, resulting in a lack of spatial coherence. The study proposes integrated recommendations addressing narrative-based museology, multi-layered destination planning, and place-sensitive governance. The study also argues the transformative potential of Mevlâna Museum as a development asset for Konya to acquire a distinctive, expe- rience-driven, and sustainable destination identity based on its unique cultural heritage.
