Relationship between Undergraduates’ Communication Skills and Their Negative Automatic Thoughts
(2013) Izgar, Hüseyin; Şirin, Hatice Deveci
Aim of this study is to present relationships between undergraduates’ communication skill points and their negative automatic thinking frequency points in terms of some demographic variables. Sample of this study consisted of 478 undergraduates (191 females and 287 males) attending Düzce University. “Communication Skills Scale (ISS)” developed by Korkut (1996b), “Automatic Thoughts Scale” developed by Hollan and Kendall (1980) and adapted to Turkish by Şahin and Şahin (1992) and “Personal Information Form” were used in the study. According to the results of the study; it was determined that there is no significant difference between the undergraduates’ communication skill points and negative automatic thinking frequency points according to their gender, their grade and place where their families lived. While undergraduates’ communication skills points do not differ in terms of the department they attend, their negative automatic thinking frequency points differ in terms of their departments. That is, undergraduates attending the department of Nursing have relatively high negative automatic thinking frequency points. It was also observed that there is a medium-level, significant negative correlation between undergraduates’ communication skills and their negative automatic thoughts.

Development and Performance Analysis of a Hybrid Filtering Method for IMU-Based Dynamic Tilt Sensor
    (2026) Dereli, İsmail; Erdogan, Kemal
Advancements in MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) technology have significantly improved the accuracy and integration potential of IMU (inertial measurement unit) based tilt sensors across various applications. However, in dynamic environments, external accelerations and vibrations adversely affect sensor performance and this leads to noise. This study proposes a dynamic tilt sensor device integrating a 6-axis IMU and implements multiple filtering strategies, that are Kalman Filter, Moving Average Filter, and Low-Pass Filter aimed at minimizing angle measurement errors. A custom test platform was developed to evaluate filter performance under dynamic conditions. The results, evaluated using RMSE (root mean square error) metrics, show that a specially designed hybrid filtering method combining the three filters achieves an average error of 0.017° in static and 1.178° in dynamic conditions. The findings demonstrate that the proposed hybrid approach offers a reliable alternative comparable to existing solutions in literature, enhancing measurement stability and accuracy in industrial applications.

A Surrogate Modeling Approach for Digital Hydraulic Valve Systems Using Model- Based Training Data
(2026) Çetin, Muhammet Hüseyin; Özalp, Adem Fatih; Polat, Refik
In digital hydraulic systems, flow regulation is achieved by combining the discrete openings of multiple on/off valves. However, performing dynamic simulations for large digital flow control units (DFCU) is computationally intensive. A 16x4 DFCU, for instance, involves 65,536 possible valve states, each requiring separate dynamic evaluation. This work presents ValveNet, a data-based model that uses a feedforward artificial neural network (ANN)to estimate the cost value J, which reflects the pressure and velocity tracking errors. The network was trained on 2,048,000 physics-based samples (4000 random operating combination x 512 valve actions per state) and validated against a benchmark grid of 65,536 valve combinations derived from a simplified model-based type. The compact ANN architecture ([16–8], SCG training) achieved R2=0.998 on validation data and maintained strong correlation with the physical model (R2=0.78–0.99) while showing a 5.7x computational speed-up. ValveNet enables rapid evaluation of complex DFCU configurations. Also, it achieves real-time valve optimization and digital hydraulic control properly.

“Schindlerin Listesi” Soykırım Öyküsünden Sinema-Mimarlık Arakesitinde “Berlin Yahudi Müzesi” Mekansal Çözümlemeleri
    (2019) Bala, Havva Alkan

Minarets, an integral part of mosques, have a thin and delicate structural form. Due to their structural form, they are very sensitive to dynamic loads, especially earthquakes. A detailed examination of the structural behaviors they exhibit under earthquake effects is of great importance for the protection of such historical and cultural heritage structures. In this study, the dynamic behavior of the historical Şeyh Sadreddin Konevi Mosque minaret in Konya under earthquake effects was evaluated. The 3D model of the structure was created using the SAP2000 V23.1 program. Modal analysis and nonlinear time history analysis were performed on the model. The analyzes were carried out in accordance with the 2018 Turkey Building Earthquake Code, and acceleration records of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes (Pazarcık Earthquake and Elbistan Earthquake) were used. In line with the obtained results, the displacements and stresses occurring in the minaret were determined, and the regions with the highest these values were identified.

Sonicated Mucilage from Defatted Flaxseed Meal as a Sustainable Natural Gum: Functional and Thermal Characterization
(2026-03-16) Yaver, Elif; Kan, Yüksel; Kan, Asuman
Flaxseed mucilage mainly consists of soluble fibers in the outermost layers of the seed. Because of its unique functional properties, such as water holding capacity, water absorption capacity, oil holding capacity and emulsion activity, it can be used as a natural gum in the food industry. Flaxseed mucilage can also exhibit certain health benefits, including anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, anti-cholesterol and antioxidant activities. In the current study, flaxseed mucilage was extracted from meal, which is a cold-pressed flaxseed oil by-product, by two different extraction methods: conventional extraction (3 h stirring at 50℃) and ultrasound-assisted extraction. The influences of ultrasound-assisted extraction at different durations (10, 20 and 30 min) on the yield, color, functional and thermal properties of flaxseed mucilage were compared with the conventional method. The maximum mucilage yield (17.46%) was obtained with ultrasound-assisted extraction for 30 min. Compared to the conventional method, ultrasound-assisted extraction elicited higher L* and whiteness index values in mucilage samples. Moreover, flaxseed mucilage extracted by ultrasound-assisted extraction for 30 min had greater water holding capacity, water absorption capacity and solubility than the other mucilage samples. Besides that, the water and oil absorption capacities of flaxseed mucilage extracted by ultrasound-assisted extraction for 30 min were comparable to xanthan gum, and its solubility was higher. Gelatinization enthalpy (ΔH) values of mucilage samples extracted by conventional and ultrasound-assisted extraction methods were similar (p>0.05). The findings elucidated that flaxseed mucilage extracted from flaxseed meal by ultrasound-assisted extraction (30 min) is a natural, non-toxic and sustainable option for commercial gums, with high yield and good functional properties.

Investigation of Machinability and Tool Wear of Polymer Concrete
(2026-03-01) Ekem, Hakkı; Koklu, Ugur; Şahin, Ömer Sinan
Polymer concrete, also known as mineral casting, is a composite material renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and durability, and has garnered significant interest in various engineering applications. However, achieving optimal machinability—particularly in terms of thrust forces and tool wear—remains a critical challenge. This study investigates the relationship between processing parameters and machinability characteristics of polymer concrete, with a particular focus on thrust forces, chip formation, and tool wear. Hole drilling tests were carried out using a Quaser-MV 154C CNC 3-axis vertical machining center, and thrust forces were measured online using a Kistler 9257B force dynamometer. HSS and carbide drills were employed in the experiments. The results show that the use of a carbide drill resulted in lower thrust forces, reduced entry and exit damage, and minimal tool wear compared to the HSS drill. Higher thrust forces were observed at low spindle speeds when using the HSS drill. Overall, the findings indicate that drilling polymer concrete requires the use of a carbide drill, high spindle speeds, and a medium feed rate to minimize hole damage and tool wear.

Elektromobilitede Tahmine Dayalı Modelleme: Bir Zaman Serisi Analizi
