Abstract: The debate on 'sustainability' can be handled as a tool of cultural transformation. The point to be emphasized here is to prioritize and evaluate sustainability as well as the semantic dimension of society and life as in the same cultural processes. Here, one of the parameters is the ontology that is present in the designed urban texture should not be ignored. Unfortunately, today, especially in cities with historical texture, with the emphasis on the ’new‘, destroying the ‘existing‘often with an easy approach!, the focus is on designing without taking care of the spirit of the existing texture. The aim of this study is to emphasize the need to design and take into account the spirit of the city. In the context of the study, the city of Konya, which has a historical texture, a survey from this dimension to the recent ‘urban design‘ and ’conservation‘ works will be brought. The continuity of the memories, dimension of meaning and ontology that make up the spirit of the cities are important for the protection of the identity of the cities. In this study, discussions are made on the basis of design for conservation and urban design projects to be realized / realized in historical center of Konya in order to maintain semantic dimensions of observation and observation.
