The usage of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) across the world has been gaining momentum in recent years and Wind Energy among them has a very rapid expansion. Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECSs) can be operated as Fixed Speed (FS) and Variable Speed (VS). However, VS-WECSs are more preferred because they have higher power capture potential. In this study, MPPT control on structure of PMSG based VS-WECS has been performed via a variable step-size PO algorithm. First of all, WECS configuration included an uncontrolled rectifier, Boost Converter (BC) and load is modelled and designed in a simulation environment. Subsequently, a wind speed profile having step variations is created and MPPT approach is tested. Herein, MPPT is achieved by adjusting the duty signal of BC which allows the generator speed to be changed for each wind speed. According to obtained results, it is seen that power extraction is carried out successfully from WECS and outcomes are presented in detail. © 2019 IEEE.en_US
