The advent of optimization algorithms facilitated finding good solutions for engineering problems. This paper presents a comparative case study between two algorithms relevant to bee search methods. One of the algorithms was modified by adding harmonic memory, which is a stage of the Harmonic Search Algorithm. Both algorithms were applied to a spherical four-link mechanism for gripper design as a case study. The results in terms of the coupler trajectory of the mechanism showed the superiority of integrating harmony memory into the Bees Algorithm. A prototype is manufactured to show the success of rapid design and production. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.en_US
