dc.description.abstract This study was conducted in the Pirsaatçay Basin located in the Shamakhi–Gobustan region on the southeastern slope of the Greater Caucasus in eastern Azerbaijan. The study area lies within the administrative boundaries of the Shamakhi district and comprises the river system developed along the Pirsaatçay valley as well as Quaternary-aged alluvial deposits. The region is part of the Alpine–Himalayan orogenic belt formed as a result of the collision between the Arabian and Eurasian plates and is influenced by a compressional tectonic regime. This tectonic framework is characterized by anticline and syncline systems, faulting, and folded sedimentary sequences. Geologically, Mesozoic, Paleogene–Miocene, and Pliocene sedimentary units are widely distributed within the study area. In particular, claystone and marl levels belonging to the Maykop Series, along with Upper Miocene–Pliocene deposits, cover extensive areas. These units are overlain by Quaternary–Holocene alluvial deposits developed along the Pirsaatçay River. The basin, developed under active tectonic control, represents a geological environment where sediment transport is pronounced due to intense weathering and erosion processes. Within the scope of the study, geochemical analyses were carried out on stream sediment and alluvial samples. Analytical results revealed the presence of trace elements such as Ag, As, Bi, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn, together with major oxide components including Al₂O₃, CaO, Fe₂O₃, K₂O, MgO, MnO, Na₂O, P₂O₅, SiO₂, and TiO₂. This elemental assemblage indicates that the sediments are associated with silicate minerals (quartz, feldspar, and clay minerals), carbonate phases, and iron oxide minerals. Moreover, the presence of elements such as As, Sb, Pb, Zn, and Cu reflects the geochemical signature resulting from the weathering of lithological units within the basin and tectonically controlled fluvial transport processes. The obtained findings demonstrate that the Pirsaatçay Basin represents a structurally controlled sedimentary system with an investigable potential in terms of heavy mineral accumulation. This study contributes to the evaluation of placer formations by establishing the relationship between the geological structure of the Shamakhi–Gobustan region and sediment geochemistry. en_US
