Abstract
Micropollutants or priority pollutants are organic or inorganic pollutants that have significant effects on the environment and human health in low concentrations. Considering their toxic properties, carcinogenic and endocrine disruptive effects and adverse effects on the environment, restrictions and prohibitions were imposed on the use of phthalate esters (FE‟s) in many countries. One of the important sources of FE‟s in water bodies is domestic/urban wastewater. In this study, the presence, level and removal of FE‟s like benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) were investigated in 200.000 m3 /day capacity advanced biological wastewater treatment plant and pilot scale treatment plant consisting of membrane processes for 1 year. Membrane processes consist of ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) units and have a capacity of 90 m3 /day. For BBP, 19,2% with biological WWTP and 71,6% removal efficiency with RO was obtained. For DnOP, 44,2% with biological WWTP and 70,2% removal efficiency with RO was obtained.
