dc.description.abstract In the last century, the increasing global population and the demand for animal food have caused the limit of the fishing and wild harvest production capacity to be reached. In order to ensure sustainability in the fishing and wild harvest, it is necessary to focus on aquaculture activities. When it is planned to open a new aquaculture facility, the first step to be taken is to determine the most suitable establishment site. Suitable site selection affects both the success and sustainability of any aquaculture development. The aim of this study is to determine the most suitable areas to establish shrimp farming facilities in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey by using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) which are among the Multi-Criteria Decision-Making methods and Geographic Information Systems. In the first stage, analyses of airports, ports, hotels and feed mill businesses in the Mediterranean Region were conducted. Second stage study was performed on the most suitable area determined as a result of the analysis. Within the scope of this purpose, eleven sub-criteria that will affect the facility location were determined under three main criteria (land, water availability, infrastructure and socio-economic). Constraint criteria were determined to exclude areas where shrimp farming facilities are not allowed to be established. As a result of the analysis, it was specified that 0.01% of the study area is highly suitable, 0.87% suitable, 4.69% moderately suitable and 94.43% unsuitable. This study showed that the AHP method and geographical information system techniques are applicable in the selection of suitable areas for greenhouse shrimp farming. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd en_US

dc.description.sponsorship Turkey is surrounded by seas on north, south and west sides and offers a wide range of opportunities in terms of fisheries and aquaculture with the presence of more than 120 streams, rivers and lakes. Similar to world aquaculture production, Turkey's aquaculture production continues to increase and the share of aquaculture in total seafood production is increasing every year. The aquaculture production, which was 10% in the early 2000s, reached 25% in 2010 and 36% in 2015. Turkey's aquaculture production in 2021 is 471 thousand tons and it constitutes 59% of the total (fishing and aquaculture) production. In the last 10 years, seafood production through aquaculture was increased by 123% in Turkey (TUIK, 2020). The shrimp farming production is very recent in Turkey. The first shrimp farming production started in 2021 and is 4 tons. Both the capacity increase by the state (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) for the production of existing species with more and higher quality and the support and incentives for the breeding of new species have been effective in the development of aquaculture in Turkey. Shrimp farming is also included in the scope of support. The development of shrimp farming, increasing production and the establishment of hatcheries were encouraged in this context (TAGEM, 2019). The small-sized enterprises were supported. Also, initiatives were initiated to determine shrimp farming sites. Bureaucratic procedures were reduced in the aquaculture permit and approval process (TAGEM, 2019). In parallel with the support of aquaculture, a significant increase was observed in the export of aquaculture, and it reached a value of approximately 11 billion Turkish Liras (TL) (approximately 591 million USD) in 2020. In the report of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (2017), it was stated that aquaculture was exported to 81 countries from Turkey and the 60% were exported to European Union (EU) countries. The success or failure of sustainable aquaculture production largely depends on the correct location the facility site. Appropriate location of the aquaculture facility will minimize the risk of environmental impact and conflict between aquaculture and other resource uses. It will also maximize the economic return (GESAMP, 2001). Environmental, socio-economic, infrastructure/superstructure and restrictive factors need to be analyzed in determining the suitability of site selection. Selection of aquaculture facility site without considering these factors may result in improper land use, abuse of natural resources, environmental decline, short-lived facility and other social conflicts (Giap and Yakupitiyage, 2005). Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to prevent these potential problems, to plan the sustainable aquaculture area and to facilitate the spatial decision-making process. GIS is a decision support system designed for the collection, storage, processing, analysis and display of large volumes of data from various sources. By using GIS, the suitability of more than one site for shrimp farming site selection can be analyzed much more quickly, comprehensively, cost-effectively, with higher accuracy and systematically. en_US
