Abstract

This study covers the stratigraphy and structural features of the Kırşehir Massif and its cover units, which crop out around Akpınar–Çiçekdağı (north of Kırşehir). Field data, petrographic studies, and GIS-based analyses indicate that the Paleozoic–Mesozoic metamorphic basement units are cut by Upper Cretaceous intrusions and are unconformably overlain by Eocene–Quaternary cover rocks. Stereographic analyses obtained from structural measurements reveal the development of distinct fold axes in both the basement and cover units, and that these folds exhibit different orientations under the influence of Paleotectonic and Neotectonic phases. An examination of the fault systems overlying the folded structures reveals that the NW–SE and NE–SW-trending right-lateral strike-slip faults, particularly those associated with the Kayseri–Sivas tectonic region, were reactivated during the Neotectonic period. The applied morphometric analyses (Smf, Vf, SL, Hi) demonstrated with quantitative data that these faults directly control the morphotectonic development in the region and that the region is classified as 'medium-level tectonic activity.' Rose diagrams derived from the fracture data indicate the presence of a multi-directional and polyphasic fracture system in both the metamorphic basement rocks and the Eocene–Quaternary cover units. These fracture clusters, when compared with fold axes and fault strikes, confirm that the study area has been affected by different stress regimes during different periods. All results obtained from the study indicate that Paleotectonic (Cretaceous–Eocene) continental collision processes and Neotectonic (Miocene–Quaternary) transtensional regimes are both decisive in the geodynamic evolution of the Kırşehir Massif.
