Comparison of Advanced Biological Treatment and Nature-Based Solutions for the Treatment of Pharmaceutically Active Compounds (phacs): a Comprehensive Study for Wastewater and Sewage Sludge
(ELSEVIER, 2021-07-01) Nas, Bilgehan; Dolu, Taylan; Argun, Mehmet Emin; Yel, Esra; Ateş, Havva; Koyuncu, Serdar; Ate, Havva
Passing of pharmaceutical residues into environment in an uncontrolled manner as a result of continuous increase in drug consumption across the globe has become a threatening problem for the ecosystems and almost all living creatures. In this study, diclofenac (DCF), carbamazepine (CBZ), 17 beta-estradiol (17 beta-E2) and 17 alpha ethynylestradiol (EE2) belonging to different therapeutic classes were investigated simultaneously in advanced biological treatment and nature-based treatments during 12-months sampling campaign. In this context, behavior patterns of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) throughout the both wastewater and sludge lines in advanced biological wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), wastewater stabilization pond (WSP) and constructed wetland (CW) were discussed in detail based on each treatment processes seasonally. Furthermore, statistically evaluated data obtained in full-scale WWTPs were compared with each other in order to determine the valid removal mechanisms of these pharmaceutical compounds. While DCF and CBZ were detected very intensively both in the wastewater and sludge lines of the investigated WWTPs, steroid hormones,17 beta-E2 and EE2, were determined below the LOQ value in general. Annual average removal efficiencies achieved in studied WWTPs for DCF ranged between & minus;23.3% (in CW) and 75.2% (in WSP), while annual average removal rates obtained for CBZ varied between & minus;20.7% (in advanced biological treatment) and 10.0% (in CW). It has been found that DCF was highly affected by different wastewater treatment processes applied in the WWTPs compared to CBZ which showed extraordinary resistance to all different treatment processes. Although calculated in different rates for each compounds, biodegradation/biotransformation and sorption onto sewage sludge were determined as the main removal mechanisms for PhACs in plants. Although showed a similar behavior in the sludge dewatering unit (decanter) present in the advanced biological WWTP, quite different behaviors ob-served in the anaerobic digester for DCF (up to 15% decrease) and CBZ (up to 95% increase). Sorption and desorp-tion behaviors of DCF and CBZ were also evaluated in the sludge treatment processes found in advanced biological WWTP. Percentages of originated extra annual average of pharmaceutical loads were calculated as 0.64% and 0.90% for DCF and CBZ, respectively in the advanced biological WWTP due to the sidestream caused by the sludge dewatering unit. Fate and Removal of Pesticides in Solid and Liquid Phases of Metropolitan, Urban and Rural-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plants
(Elsevier, 2023) Nas, Bilgehan; Yel, Esra; Argun, M. E.; Dinc, S.; Kara, M.; Koyuncu, S.; Dolu, Taylan; Ates, H.
In this study, the change of occurrence, distribution, seasonal variation and removal of pesticides, atrazine (ATZ), chlorpyriphos (CPR) and chlorfenvinphos (CFV), were investigated both in liquid and solid phases of three different types of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Treatment configurations of the studied WWTPs consist of a metropolitan advanced biological treatment system (4-stage Bardenpho), urban-scale waste stabilization pond (WSP) and rural-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSCW). ATZ removal efficiencies (59.8 %-92.4 %) were higher than CPR and CFV removal efficiencies at all WWTPs. CPR and CFV are removed at 78.5 % and 53.1 % efficiency, respectively, from the influent of advanced biological treatment system. CPR and CFV removals were 21.6 and 22.7 % at WSP, respectively. One of the important findings is that ATZ and CFV were removed at higher percentages in primary treatment than in biological treatment in advanced biological WWTP. Sorption onto sludge has been evaluated as an effective removal mechanism for pesticide elimination, at least as much as biodegradation/biotransformation. All investigated pesticides were detected in higher concentrations in primary sludge (168.8-399.5 mu g/kg) compared to secondary sludge (21.9-146.3 mu g/kg) in advanced biological WWTP and in facultative sludge (447.8-1044.7 mu g/kg) compared to anaerobic sludge (250.0-613.0 mu g/kg) in WSP. It was determined that ATZ was the most treated compound in the liquid phase under anaerobic conditions among the studied pesticides. In line with these results, approximately 45 % removal efficiency was determined for CPR and CFV in the anaerobic digestion process present in advanced biological WWTP.

Zero Waste Applications for the Apple Processing Wastes: Recovery of Valuable Compounds by Supercritical Co2 and Wastewater Treatment by Advanced Oxidation
(Elsevier, 2025-02-01) Argun, Mehmet Emin; Argun, Mustafa Samil; Ates, Havva; Arslan, Fatma Nur; Cakmakci, Ozguer; Nas, Bilgehan; Tongur, Sueheyla
This study has focused on the characterization, recovery and treatment of apple processing wastes, which are important in terms of sustainability and circular economy. Apple processing wastewater (AW) was noted for its acidity (pH 4.2), high chemical oxygen demand (COD) (114 g/L), total solids (TS; 13.5 %) and oil/grease content (16.5 g/L), as well as the presence of valuable fatty acids and phenolics. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC) and antioxidant activity were determined in the wastewater as 1660 mg GAE/L, 421 mg QE/L and 2.1 mM TE, respectively. The extraction of phenolic compounds from AW and apple pomace (AP) using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction was investigated as a first step. The results indicate that SC-CO2 extraction is effective in recovering phenolic compounds from apple processing wastes. The extraction yields for AW and AP using SC-CO2 reached up to 76 % and 43 % of the extractable oils, respectively. Recovery efficiencies of the TPC were observed to be up to 3.8 % for AW and 11.4 % for AP. Furthermore, the phenolic and fatty acid profiles of extracts were also evaluated, indicating the recovery of valuable compounds such as quercetin, catechin, procyanidin B2, a)-6 and a)-9 fatty acids. In terms of wastewater treatment, the use of ozone oxidation (OO) and supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) for the removal of COD, suspended solids (SS), TPC and toxicity from AW were also investigated. The OO exhibited relatively low COD removal efficiency, while SCWO demonstrated high efficiency ranging from 84 % to 99.8 %. This study has revealed that while SCWO effectively removes COD, TPC, SS and color from fruit processing wastewater, OO demonstrates greater effectiveness in reducing toxicity in the Vibrio fischeri test.

Fate of Pahs Under Subcritical and Supercritical Conditions in Landfill Leachate: Removal or Formation?
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA, 2021) Ateş, Havva; Argun, Mehmet Emin
In this study, fate of eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) described as priority pollutants by the European Union during the subcritical and supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) of landfill leachate was investigated. The experiments were conducted under the temperature of 250?500 ?C, pressure of 10?35 MPa, residence time of 2?18 min and dimensionless oxidant dose (DOD) of 0.2?2.3. The results revealed that the SCWO process had a high potential for degradation of PAHs except for four and more rings from leachate having high organic and inorganic pollutant loads. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), naphthalene (NAP), anthracene (ANT) and fluoranthene (FL) increased up to 98%, 97%, 95%, and 87%, respectively. However, the high removal efficiencies of COD did not directly correlate with the removal of PAHs. 2- to 4-ring PAHs increased in subcritical and supercritical conditions at 0.4 DOD. Additionally, PAH compounds such as pyrene and chrysene not found in raw leachate were detected in some treated samples at low DOD and high temperature. It was concluded that aromatic substances detected in the leachate could transform to naphthalene, anthracene and fluoranthene with merger/separation reactions. On the other hand, aldehyde, ketone and phenol-based compounds were detected as the transformation products when the oxidation mechanism was dominant. Therefore, optimum experimental conditions that aimed to both minimize PAHs formation and maximize COD removal were determined as 7 min, 2 DOD, 375 ?C and 22.5 MPa.

Investigation of Conversion of Sunflower Oil Production Wastes To High Value Compounds by Supercritical Co2
(Yildiz Technical University, 2023-06-30) Kılıçarslan, Müberra Nur; Argun, M.E.
The evaluation of wastes from edible oil production industry has increasing importance because of resources deficiency and growing population day by day. It was aimed to investigate the recovery potential of oil and valuable components from sunflower oil production wastes by using supercritical CO2(SC-CO2) extraction as a green extraction method. In this context oil amounts, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities were analyzed. The waste samples obtained from filtration processes of the oil which were composed of oily bentonite (OB) and waxy perlite (WP). Soxhlet extraction was also applied on the waste samples to calculate extraction efficiencies of the SC-CO2. It was observed that SC- CO2extraction was more effective for OB (27%, v/v) than WP (11%, v/v). In addition, the efficiency increased to 37% by mixing expanded perlite and OB sample to absorb moisture content of the waste and to increase the diffusion of carbon dioxide more easily. The statistical evaluation of the experiments was also conducted to determine the effect of independent variables on the recovery efficiencys. Pressure was detected more effective variables on the recovery values than temperature. The maximum recovery efficiencies of the oil and TPC were obtained at the 50 °C, 22.1 MPa and 60 °C, 20 MPa, respectively. © 2023 The authors.

Zero Waste Principle for the Fruit Processing Industry: Recovery, Advanced Conversion and Revalorization Approaches
(Elsevier, 2025-03-01) Argun, Mehmet Emin; Argun, Mustafa Samil; Ates, Havva
The fruit processing industry holds a significant position in the global economy; however, it also has substantial environmental impacts. The fruit processing industry generates significant amounts of waste, accounting for up to 8 % of total food waste. The water footprint of this industry is concerning, with approximately 10 L of wastewater generated for every 1 L of juice produced. These abundant, inexpensive, and easily accessible waste materials contain high amounts of beneficial compounds that can serve as substrates for biochemical transformations. These waste streams are rich in valuable phytochemicals, particularly phenolic compounds, which possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties. Phytochemicals can be utilized in the food industry, healthcare, pharmaceutical industry, and cosmetics. In this way, negative effects on the environment, the pollution load of wastewater, and economic losses can be reduced, contributing to the circular economy. However, the wastewater still requires treatment even after some compounds have been recovered. Treatment plants generally include biological processes, while some technologies, such as membrane-based systems and advanced oxidation, have also been reported in the literature. This study aims to reveal the recovery, advanced conversion, and revalorization approaches of valuable components from fruit processing industry wastes for sustainable and environmentally friendly food production by reviewing the current literature.
