Damage Analysis of Golyazi Apartments Building Failed Under Axial Loads: a Case Study in Konya, Turkey
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC, 2021) Nakipoğlu, Abdulhamit; Ünal, Alptuğ; Kamanlı, Mehmet
This study is in the characteristics of a case study. In this study, damage analysis has been made to the Golyazi Apartments Block A building and the causes of the damages were investigated. The building is located in Konya/ Turkey. It has some damaged vertical load bearing elements as a result of various effects. The damage was first detected by the residents in September 2018. Creep and axial load analyzes were carried out in the building through ETABS and ANSYS structural analysis programs and crack/damage checks were made analytically for the existing damage situation and for new damages that might occur. At the end of the study, it has been observed in some of the columns in the humid basement of the building that load bearing capacities were exceeded due to creep, axial compressive loads and corrosion effects and severe damages occurred. In addition, ANSYS analysis results coincide with existing building damage. Although no damage occurred in some of the columns of the structure, damage was observed in the same columns in the ANSYS model. This situation might predict the future damage in the building that can happen. Finally, some measures that can be taken as a result of the identified damage situation are presented.

Multifunctional Behavior of Composite Beams Incorporating Hybridized Carbon-Based Materials Under Cyclic Loadings
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2022-01-01) Öztürk, Oğuzhan; Koçer, Mustafa; Ünal, Alptuğ
The investigation was performed on the cyclic self-sensing behavior of reinforced composite beams produced with carbon fiber (CF) and carbon black (CB) in a hybridized form. Prior to the investigation, CFs and CBs were individually used in small-scale specimens at different ratios. The electrical properties were tailored by binary using of CFs and CBs for the improved self-sensing functionality. After evaluation of electrical and mechanical properties, self-sensing reinforced composite beams were produced with a span/effective depth ratio of 2.2. Repetitive loading and unloading cycles within elastic and plastic range were separately evaluated and applied for the developed composite beams. Beams were tested up to 30% and 70% of their ultimate flexural strength for the cyclic loadings within elastic and plastic range, respectively. Engineering properties and self-sensing assessments were simultaneously performed. Experimental findings revealed that developed composite beams provided a reversible piezoresistive behavior under plastic regime although it was partially possible under the elastic regime. Only beams coupled with hybrid carbon-based materials were able to repetitively self-sense damages between %30 and %70 of the total applied load. Carbon-based materials made a slight contribution to the engineering properties of beams as also validated by finite element analysis.

Examination of the Vertical Earthquake Force on a Sample Building With Different Outputs According To Tec2018
(2022) Akay, Büşra Selvi; Ünal, Alptuğ; Koçer, Mustafa
The concept of vertical spectrum started to be implemented in Turkey with the Turkish Building Earthquake Code 2018 (TEC 2018) regulation. Before this regulation, earthquake analysis was carried out under horizontal loads with only the horizontal spectrum in buildings and it was predicted to stay on the safe side with the axial load limitation made on the columns. In TEC 2018, vertical earthquake analysis is performed depending on the structural defects in the structures. In this study, vertical earthquake analyzes were carried out on building samples with different ratios of cantilever overhangs. During these analyses, the vertical earthquake acceleration assumption made in the earthquake code and the analysis results obtained from the vertical earthquake spectrum were examined. For this purpose, firstly, horizontal earthquake forces under equivalent earthquake force, axial load levels on the columns and sectional effects and displacements on the cantilever supports were obtained on the structures. These results were compared with the data obtained from the vertical spectrum analysis with the response spektrum method, which is the dynamic analysis. The results obtained show that the assumptions made in the equivalent earthquake load method are on the safe side.

Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Support Conditions on Beam Shear Behaviour in Full Scale Reinforced Concrete Beams
(Croatian Soc Civil Engineers-Hsgi, 2024) Ünal, Alptuğ; Kamanlı, Mehmet; Solak, Abdulkadir; Cengiz, Salih
In studies on beams in the literature, the beam elements are designed and tested as simply supported. Therefore, in this study, the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under fixed support conditions was numerically investigated using ANSYS finite element software. The variables used in the study are the shear span/effective depth ratio (a/d) and stirrup spacing of the analysed specimens. In this study, 16 RC beams on a 1/1 scale were analysed in 4 -point bending protocol. The a/d ratios were assumed to be 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, in the test members produced. In addition, as another variable, the lateral reinforcement amount was designed and analysed at 4)8/75, 4)8/150 and 4)8/300 mm spacings without stirrups. Load-displacement and stiffness graphs are drawn based on the numerical results. The numerical results were interpreted and compared based on the graphs drawn for each analysis, stress distribution, and damage occurrence in the experiments. The results indicated that the a/d ratio and number of stirrups had strong effects on the behaviour of the fixed supported beams. The results of the beam analyses obtained using ANSYS finite element software were consistent with the experimental results.

Effect of Stirrup Spacing and Polypropylene Fiber Ratio on Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beams
(BUDAPEST UNIV TECHNOLOGY ECONOMICS, 2021-01-22) Ünal, Alptuğ; Cengiz, Salih; Kamanlı, Mehmet
In this study, the effect of the change of stirrup ratio and polypropylene (PP) fiber ratio on the behavior of reinforced concrete beams was investigated. The variables of this study consisting of without stirrup, spacing up to 20 %, 40 % and 80 % of beam depth as stirrup spacing and 0.125 % and 0.500 % of the weight of reinforced concrete beam were used as PP fiber ratios. In the context of experimental study, 1/2 scaled 12 reinforced concrete beams were tested with 4-point bending mechanism. In the light of the obtained data, the load-displacement, stiffness and energy absorption graphs were plotted. The results were interpreted comparatively. According to the results, it is observed that the PP fiber additive significantly changed the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams, and the fiber effect decreased in proportion to the increase of the stirrup rate. It has been observed that the cracks spread more to the beam surfaces with the increase of PP fibers. In addition, the increase in the fiber ratio especially in the non-stirrup beams increases the bending capacity.
