Piezo-Resistivity of Cement-Based Mortars Doped With Carbon Black and Carbon Fibers for Self-Sensing Behavior
(2021) Öztürk, Oğuzhan; Ünal, Alptuğ; Koçer, Mustafa
The efficient use of carbon-based materials is of a challenge for the advanced self-sensing behavior of cement-based mortars. This study deals with the dispersion of the carbon-based materials and investigating the self-sensing response by using conductive fillers. To do this, carbon black (CB) and carbon fibers (CF) were used cement mortars to evaluate the piezo-resistivity response. Dispersion of the conductive fillers was achieved by using sodium hydroxide as surfactant. Reference specimens were produced and comparison was made with the specimens doped with CB and CF. Experimental work reveals that CB and CF enabled superior relative change in electrical resistivity of composites. However, CF was more promising than CB in terms of achieving higher piezo-resistivity. In addition to non-structural functionalities, mechanical properties of developed mixtures were also evaluated. The use of CF provided higher flexural strength compared to reference and CB-bearing specimens. On the other hand, carbon-based materials made a negligible contribution to the compressive strength of the cement-based mortars.

Rc Structural Damages Observed After October 30, 2020, Seferihisar-Izmir Earthquake and Analytical Evaluation of Existing Sample Rc Buildings
(Springer, 2023-02-19) Koçer, M.; Ünal, Alptuğ
In Turkey, the Izmir earthquake with M-w = 6.9 moment magnitude with the epicenter of 17.26 km off the Seferihisar (Izmir) coast in the Aegean Sea occurred in October 30, 2020, at Turkish time 14.51. According to the acceleration records of Izmir earthquake, the recorded peak ground acceleration (PGA) was approximately 0.182 g, and 117 deaths occurred in this earthquake, while 1032 people were injured. In this study, the structural damages that occurred on the buildings due to the Izmir earthquake were examined and discussed in detail according to the current and former Turkish regulations. Moreover, a RC building constructed in 1998 and survived the earthquake without any permanent damage (a 5-story building designed as 3-story in the existing static project but added two more floors without any in situ strengthening) was subjected to pushover analysis, linear analyses considering regulations and nonlinear time-history pushover analysis according to the acceleration records of Izmir earthquake. The obtained structural results were compared and discussed according to the current and former regulations.

A Novel Strengthening Technique Against Short Column Failure in Rc Structures: Sifcon Panels
(Springer, 2022-12-23) Kayacik, Fatih; Ünal, Alptuğ; Doğan, Gamze
In this study, a new strengthening method has been developed against possible short column damage, which is one of the dangerous damages that may cause the collapse of buildings in reinforced concrete columns. For this purpose, 14 reinforced concrete frame tests with 1/3 geometric scale, which differ from each other in the ground floor infill wall lengths, were carried out. 5 of the reinforced concrete frames were produced as reference specimens, and in 9 specimens, short columns in reinforced concrete frames were strengthened with various panel types produced using SIFCON (Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete), an ultra-performance special concrete. In the study, the effects of SIFCON panels on short column damages were examined by evaluating the test results in terms of strength, energy consumption, stiffness, ductility and damage formation. Against the short column effects, it was determined that the specimens strengthened with S3 type panels placed along the short column showed the best performance. The load carrying capacities of the strengthened specimens were found to be higher, varying between 34 and 80%, compared to the reference specimens with the same characteristics. In addition, it was observed that the initial stiffness and cumulative energy consumption values of strengthened specimens reached up to 2 and 2.25 times, respectively, compared to the reference specimens with the same characteristics.

Evaluation of Tec 2018 and Tec 2007 Regulations in the Buildings Having B1 and B2 Irregularities in Accordance With İzmir Earthquake
(2021) Koçer, Mustafa; Ünal, Alptuğ; Öztürk, Oğuzhan
In the case of Izmir Earthquake occurred in 31.10.2020, it is observed that several buildings have structural defects. Weak story and soft story irregularities were among the significant structural defects recorded in İzmir Earthquake. For this reason, an 8-story building having weak and soft story irregularities were examined according to TEC 2018 and TEC 2007 codes. In this study, Time History analysis was performed by using acceleration records in Izmir. The analysis was conducted with a nonlinear analysis program and differences between the earthquake codes were studied. According the results, although the so-called spectral acceleration values are smaller than the design spectrum in the regulations, the regulation boundary conditions are exceeded in structures with soft story irregularities.

The Effect of Combined Loads on Core Sample Strength
(2026) Ünal, Alptuğ; Kamanlı, Mehmet; Solak, Abdulkadir; Cengiz, Salih
This experimental investigation focuses on the influence of structural damage on the concrete compressive strength of reinforced concrete vertical members subjected to complex combined actions consisting of axial load, bending moment, and torsion. Concrete core samples were obtained from structural members tested under various loading configurations, as well as from undamaged specimens serving as reference cases, and their compressive strengths were evaluated comparatively. The experimental results consistently reveal that core samples extracted from damaged members exhibit lower compressive strength values than those obtained from undamaged reference samples. The magnitude of strength degradation was found to vary between 9% and 29%, depending on the specific loading combination applied. The most pronounced reduction in compressive strength, reaching 29%, occurred in specimens exposed to loading conditions dominated by torsional effects. These outcomes provide quantitative evidence that, in the evaluation of seismically damaged reinforced concrete structures, the determination of in-situ concrete strength should account not only for test measurements but also for the loading history and the extent of damage experienced by the structural member.
