Uncertainty-Gated Dual-Branch Additive–Attention Network for Robust and Calibrated Tabular Classification Under Missingness
    (2026) Cıhan, Mücahit
Tabular deep learning is still challenging in real-world settings. Many datasets include both numerical and categorical variables, substantial missingness, and a need for not only strong classification performance but also interpretability and reliable probability estimates. DA2-Net is proposed to address this problem through a dual-branch architecture. It combines an interpretable additive pathway for feature-wise main effects with a selective self-attention pathway for higher-order interactions. In this design, features are ranked using additive contribution magnitude, uncertainty, and missingness-aware scaling. Only a Top-K subset is then passed to a single multi-head self-attention block. The final prediction is obtained through uncertainty-aware gated fusion. The model is also supported by sparsity, stability, and Brier-based calibration regularization. This allows it to balance expressive interaction modeling with transparency and robustness under incomplete data. DA2-Net is evaluated on four public binary tabular benchmarks, namely AdultIncome, DefaultCredit, HeartDisease, and BankMarketing, under controlled Missing Completely At Random (MCAR) missingness levels of 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3. The evaluation uses 5-fold stratified cross-validation repeated across three random seeds. This produces 15 runs for each dataset and missingness condition, and 128 evaluation blocks in total across AUC, AUPRC, ACC, F1, sensitivity, specificity, Brier score, and Expected Calibration Error (ECE). Across this benchmark, DA2-Net achieves the best overall mean rank with 3.078 ± 2.044, ahead of SAINT-Lite at 3.980 ± 2.624. It achieves or shares the best result in all 16 AUC blocks, 13 of 16 AUPRC blocks, 10 of 16 ACC blocks, 11 of 16 Brier blocks, and 7 of 16 ECE blocks. These results show that its main strength lies in robust ranking-based discrimination and strong overall probability quality under missingness. It also shows a favorable practical-efficiency profile in the current benchmark, remaining more compact and inference-efficient than the main transformer-like baselines. Epoch-wise loss analysis also shows stable convergence across all four datasets. The binary cross-entropy (BCE) term drives the optimization, while the auxiliary regularizers act as controlled refinements. The ablation study further confirms that the interaction branch is essential. Removing it in the AdditiveOnly variant causes the clearest degradation in both predictive and calibration metrics. In contrast, removing the gate or the auxiliary regularization terms leads only to minor changes. A sensitivity analysis also supported the selected interaction subset size k=10 and spline knot count K=8 as balanced settings, while additive shape-function visualizations provided direct qualitative evidence for feature-wise interpretability.

Irsn: Involutional Residual Spectral Network for Hyperspectral Image Classification
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2024) Cihan, M.; Ceylan, M.
Convolutional methods are commonly used for hyperspectral imaging (HSI) classification. However, HSI datasets are large due to numerous narrow-band spectra, leading to high computational costs and optimization challenges in convolution-based deep learning models. To address this, we propose the involutional residual spectral network (IRSN), using involution kernels tailored to the data for meaningful feature extraction. IRSN achieves this with fewer parameters than convolutions. By leveraging involution layers based on spectral signatures, IRSN captures spectral-spatial information. Furthermore, residual blocks within the network facilitate information preservation and overcome gradient-related challenges. Experimental studies conducted using four publicly available datasets demonstrate that the proposed IRSN model outperforms certain state-of-the-art convolutional-based networks in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Fusion of Ct and Mr Liver Images Using Multiresolution Analysis Methods
    (2021-12-03) Cihan, Mücahit; Ceylan, Murat
There are various medical imaging techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) techniques. Both techniques give complex features of the region to be imaged. This study proposes an approach that uses Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) methods to fuse CT and MR liver images to obtain as detailed images as possible for medical diagnostic purposes. The transform coefficients are obtained by applying MRA methods to the images. Images are combined by applying 3 different fusion rules to these transform coefficients. Peak Signal to Noise Rate (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and Mean Square Error (MSE) values are calculated to evaluate the fused images. When comparing the methods, the best result was obtained using complex-valued curvelet transform.

Multi-View Thermal Breast Imaging for Malignancy Detection: Performance Benchmarking of CNN, Transformer, and Involution Architectures
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2026) Cihan, M.; Ceylan, M.
Breast cancer screening demands accurate, non-invasive, low-cost tools. Infrared thermography is radiation-free and portable, but its utility hinges on robust computer-aided diagnosis (CAD). We benchmark three deep-learning families for static multi-view breast thermography—CNNs, Transformers, and an involution-based model (HarmonyNet-Lite). Experiments use the Breast Thermography dataset (119 patients; 476 manually segmented ROIs from anterior/oblique views). A compact pipeline performs ROI segmentation, RGB conversion, normalization, resizing, and moderate data augmentation; class imbalance is handled with minority oversampling and class-weighted loss. Evaluation follows patient-stratified five-fold cross-validation. HarmonyNet-Lite yields the best results: accuracy 87.47 ± 2.99%, recall 93.33 ± 2.13%, F1 68.43 ± 8.75%, and precision 54.23 ± 8.94%, indicating high sensitivity with an acceptable trade-off in precision for screening. Among CNNs, ResNet50 is strongest (85.59 ± 3.37%; F1 63.16 ± 3.87%), followed by InceptionV3 (83.38 ± 1.41%; F1 59.99 ± 6.72%), while DenseNet121 lags (79.25 ± 2.98%; F1 52.38 ± 5.62%). Transformer performance is mixed: ViT-Tiny is competitive (84.59 ± 4.23%; F1 59.46 ± 4.68%), whereas Swin-Tiny trails (81.30 ± 2.32%; F1 57.14 ± 4.44%) due to lower precision. Despite using only 0.14 M parameters, HarmonyNet-Lite outperforms heavier CNNs (ResNet50: 23.59 M; InceptionV3: 21.81 M) and lighter Transformers (ViT-Tiny: 2.84 M; Swin-Tiny: 11.78 M), demonstrating that content-adaptive, spatially aware involution operators efficiently capture fine thermal gradients. These findings position HarmonyNet-Lite as a strong, deployable CAD candidate. Future work will pursue multi-center validation, automated segmentation, multi-class labeling, hybrid involution–attention/multimodal models, and controlled GAN-based augmentation to mitigate data scarcity. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.

Image Fusion and Deep Learning Based Ear Recognition Using Thermal and Visible Images
    (2023) Ceylan, Murat; Cihan, Mücahit
Advances in imaging and deep learning have fueled interest in ear biometrics, as the structure of the ear offers unique identification features. Thermal and visible ear images capture different aspects of these features. Thermal images are light-independent, and visible images excel at capturing texture details. Combining these images creates more feature-rich composite images. This study examines the fusion of thermal and visible ear images taken under varying lighting conditions to enhance automatic ear recognition. The image fusion process involved three distinct multiresolution analysis methods: discrete wavelet transform, ridgelet transform, and curvelet transform. Subsequently, a specially designed deep learning model was used for ear recognition. The results of this study reveal that employing the complex-valued curvelet transform and thermal images achieved an impressive recognition rate of 96.82%, surpassing all other methods. Conversely, visible images exhibited the lowest recognition rate of 75.00%, especially in low-light conditions. In conclusion, the fusion of multiple data sources significantly enhances ear recognition effectiveness, and the proposed model consistently achieves remarkable recognition rates even when working with a limited number of fused ear images.

CALA-HSI: Content-Adaptive Local Attention for Spectral-Spatial Hyperspectral Image Classification
(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2026) Cıhan, Mücahit
Abstract Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification remains challenging because spectral bands are highly redundant, labeled samples are often scarce, and land-cover patterns can vary substantially across heterogeneous scenes. To address these challenges, this study proposes Content-Adaptive Local Attention for Hyperspectral Image Classification (CALA-HSI), a compact spectral-spatial framework designed for robust classification under limited supervision. Instead of modeling all spatial positions globally, the proposed Content-Adaptive Local Attention (CALA) mechanism adaptively aggregates spatial evidence within local neighborhoods. This allows each pixel to use context-dependent information while preserving a lightweight computational structure. A compact Squeeze-and-Excitation inspired Spectral Attention module (SpA) is also integrated before CALA to recalibrate informative spectral responses and suppress less useful channels. CALA-HSI is evaluated on four widely used benchmarks, Indian Pines, Pavia University, Salinas, and Houston University, under four supervision regimes corresponding to 15%, 10%, 5%, and 1% labeled training samples. Across 16 evaluation scenarios and nine representative baselines, CALA-HSI achieves the highest mean Overall Accuracy (OA) of 96.04 ± 5.74%, the highest mean kappa coefficient of 94.28 ± 7.65%, the lowest mean loss of 0.153 ± 0.223, and the best mean OA rank of 1.44. It ranks first in OA and kappa coefficient in 11 out of 16 scenarios and appears in the Top-3 OA results in 15 scenarios. The model remains highly compact, with 46,724 parameters and an average computational cost of 0.0257 billion floating-point operations (GFLOPs). Ablation studies show that CALA is the main contributor to spectral-spatial discrimination, while the complete SpA and CALA design provides the most reliable gains, particularly under extreme label scarcity. Statistical and best/worst-case analyses further indicate a favorable scenario-level tendency for CALA-HSI. These results show that CALA-HSI provides an effective balance between accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for HSI classification under limited supervision.
