Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Weight Optimization of Hybrid Composite Laminate Using Learning-Oriented Artificial Algae Algorithm(SPRINGER INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING AG, 2020-07-03) Yibre, Abdulkerim Mohammed; Koçer, Barış; Esleman, Esmael Adem; Önal, GürolThe optimal design of parameters is vital for the effective use of hybrid composite laminated structures. This is due to a highly dependent property of laminated composite structures strength on its fiber orientation, stacking sequence and the number of ply in each laminate. The main aim of this study is to apply Learning-Oriented Artificial Algae Algorithm for optimization of the weight of rectangular hybrid composite laminated plate subjected to compressive in-plane loading. The design parameters are number of plies and stacking sequence of the laminate. The critical buckling factor is the constraint of the optimization process. The parameters of the hybrid composite plate are optimized using Learning-Oriented Artificial Algae Algorithm with the aim of minimizing weight. The performance of the algorithm was compared with previous studies that employed the GA and ACO algorithms. The Learning-Oriented method is integrated to reduce the number of functions evaluated and in turn reducing computational cost. The results showed that Learning-Oriented Artificial Algae Algorithm outperformed GA and ACO, and hence can be successfully applied in the optimization of laminated composite structures.Article Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Different Conditioning Temperatures on Mode-i Fracture Toughness in Intraply Hybrid Carbon/Aramid/Elium Composites(2026) Guzel, Muhammed Huseyin; Önal, GürolThis study investigates the Mode-I fracture toughness performance of intraply hybrid carbon/aramid fiber-reinforced Elium thermoplastic composites under various thermal conditioning temperatures ranging from -50 °C to +50 °C. Specimens were manufactured using the hand lay-up assisted vacuum infusion method and subjected to Double-Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests. The results demonstrate that thermal conditioning significantly influences the interlaminar fracture energy. Specifically, sub-zero conditioning at -50 °C resulted in a 10.41% increase in fracture toughness compared to the reference temperature (+25 °C), reaching a value of 1240.30 J/m2, which is attributed to enhanced fiber bridging. Notably, at +50 °C, the fracture toughness reached its peak value of 1242.61 J/m2, representing a 10.61% improvement. This enhancement is linked to the softening effect and increased ductility of the Elium matrix as it approaches its glass transition region. The study’s original contribution lies in characterizing the thermal resilience of these recyclable hybrid composites, proving that Elium-based systems can maintain and even enhance their damage tolerance under fluctuating environmental conditions. These findings provide critical data for the design of sustainable and high-performance structural components in the aerospace and automotive industries.Article Influence of Water Aging on The Mode-I Fracture Toughness of Intraply Hybrid Carbon/Aramid/Elium Composites(2026) Guzel, Muhammed Huseyin; Önal, GürolIn this study, the fracture behavior of carbon/aramid intraply hybrid fiber-reinforced composites with a thermoplastic Elium matrix was investigated using the double-cantilever beam test. The composites were aged in distilled water for up to 6 months, and the fracture performance of unaged samples was compared with those aged for 2, 4, and 6 months. The maximum force and Mode-I fracture toughness of unaged samples were 152.84 N and 1131.43 J/m2, respectively. After aging, these values increased by 26.99% and 32.14%, reaching 194.09 N and 1495.11 J/m2, respectively. Notably, water aging positively affected the interlaminar delamination behavior of carbon/aramid/Elium composites. The findings of this study demonstrate that Elium matrix hybrid composites are a promising alternative for real-world applications in demanding environments such as marine and automotive, as their interlaminar fracture toughness increases even after water aging.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Cutting Force and Delamination Optimization of Nanoparticle-Reinforced Basalt/Epoxy Multi-Scale Composites in Dry Drilling by Taguchi Design(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2025-05-21) Bolat, Cagin; Sukur, Emine Feyza; Ergene, Berkay; Yalcin, Bekir; Maras, Sinan; Karakilinc, Ucan; Onal, GurolPurposeThe real-time performance requirements of montage components and assembly features of structural parts are among the most critical factors for the utilization of polymer-matrix laminates in the aerospace industry. In this context, the present study provides a comprehensive perspective on the dry drilling optimization of nanographene-added basalt fiber-reinforced epoxy composite laminates, focusing on cutting force and surface delamination damage.Design/methodology/approachThe combined effects of feed rate (FR) (0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 mm/rev), tool diameter (3 and 5 mm) and nanographene ratio (0, 0.3 and 0.7 wt.%) were investigated as input parameters using a specially designed dagger tool for the first time in the literature. Additionally, Taguchi's L18 design was employed to determine the optimal combination of input variables.FindingsThe results indicate that lower feed rates, smaller tool diameters and higher nanoparticle concentrations result in the lowest cutting forces. As for the delamination factor, lower feed rates, larger tool diameters and higher nanoparticle concentrations were identified as the best combination to maintain the structural integrity of the machined surfaces. Only localized minor chips were seen at the best combination. Detected outcomes can be used for future projects that aim to explore the joining strength of mechanical assembly for aircraft laminate structures.Originality/valueAchieving high-performance composite assemblies in aerospace applications (particularly in wing, fuselage and interior components), with sufficient mechanical properties, requires precise optimization of drilling operations to ensure strong joints and high-quality surfaces without delamination defects. This study, specifically focusing on nanoparticle-modified basalt fiber-reinforced laminates for aerospace implementations, is the first to elucidate the combined effects of FR, tool diameter and nanoparticle ratio on thrust force and delamination factor.Doctoral Thesis Farklı Sıcaklık ve Su Yaşlandırmasının Aramid Karbon Takviyeli Elium Matrisli Kompozitlerin Mekanik Özelliklerine Etkisi(2025) Güzel, Muhammed Hüseyin; Önal, GürolBu tez çalışmasında, katman içi aramid/karbon hibrit fiber takviyeli termoplastik Elium matrisli kompozitlerin mekanik performansı farklı sıcaklık ve su yaşlandırması etkisi altında deneysel olarak incelenmiştir. It applies to civil construction, metallurgical production, rivers, and seaports. The primary purpose of this paper is to control the motion/position of the overhead crane using a PID controller using Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Bee Algorithms (BA) as optimization tools. Moreover, Fuzzy Logic modified PID Controller is applied to obtain better controller parameters. The mathematical model uses an analytical method, and the PID model employs Simulink in MATLAB. The paper presents the PID parameters determination with a different approach. The development of membership functions, fuzzy rules employ the Fuzzy Logic toolbox. Both inputs and outputs use triangular membership functions. The result shows that the optimized value of the PID controller with the Ziegler-Nichols approach is time-consuming and will provide only the initial parameters. However, PID parameters obtained with the optimization method using GA and BA reached the target values. The results obtained with the fuzzy logic controller (0.227% overshoot) show improvement in overshoot than the conventional PID controller (0.271% overshoot).Master Thesis Polietilen Matrisli Tuzlu Su Ortamında Yaşlandırılan Hibrit Kompozit Malzemelerin Düşük Hızlı Darbe Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi(2024) Ateş, Tuncay; Önal, GürolBu çalışmamda, deniz ortamını simüle eden %3 NaCl içeren tuzlu su koşullarında yaşlandırılan polietilen (PE) matrisli hibrit kompozitlerin düşük hızlı darbe davranışları incelenmiştir. Article Citation - WoS: 28Citation - Scopus: 29The Effect of Halloysite Nanotube Modification on Wear Behavior of Carbon-Aramid Fiber Reinforced Hybrid Nanocomposites(WILEY, 2021-11-18) Çetin, Mehmet Emin; Baştosun, Yusuf; Tatar, Ahmet Caner; Çetin, Muhammet Hüseyin; Demir, Okan; Önal, Gürol; Avcı, AhmetIn this study, the carbon-aramid fiber reinforced hybrid composites are fabricated using a vacuum-assisted hand lay-up method using halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) modified epoxy matrix. Ball-on-disk wear tests are performed to analyze the tribological effect of neat and HNTs-added specimens at 10, 15, and 20 N loads and 1 m/s sliding speed. Additionally, the wear rate and friction coefficient results are obtained to investigate the effect of the HNTs on the tribological behavior of hybrid composites. The wear mechanism of neat and nanocomposite specimens is specified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and the elemental analysis of worn surfaces is performed using EDX. Finally, the surface morphology is evaluated with 3D topography images. Additionally, thermal camera images are used to identify the thermal conductivity effect of HNTs on wear. The wear test results show that HNTs-addition to composite decreased the friction coefficient by 9%, 10%, and 11% for 10 N, 15 N, and 20 N loadings, respectively. The wear rate is also decreased average by 75% for wear loadings. Surface form images acquired from 3D topography support the enhancement in the friction coefficient and wear rate values. Furthermore, thermal camera images show that thermal conductivity improvement on the contact region is attributed to well thermal properties of HNTs. Furthermore, the solid-lubricant characteristic of HNTs as forming tribofilm is determined as the main reason for the enhanced tribological performance of nanocomposites. Finally, a detailed wear mechanism is proposed to explain the wear behavior of HNTs-added carbon-aramid hybrid composites based on SEM images.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Investigation of Optical and Dispersion Parameters of Polyacrylonitrile (pan) Nanofibers Fabricated Via Electrospinning Method(Natl Inst Optoelectronics, 2021) Dinçer, K.; Önal, G.; Akın, U.; Tuğluoğlu, N.; Yüksel, O. F.The current paper deals with the studies of optical properties of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, as an engineering material with increasing technological attention. The optical properties of PAN nanofibers deposited by the electrospinning technique were investigated.
