Exploring Mil-53 (al) Adsorption Efficiency for Indigo Carmine Dye
(Konya Teknik Univ, 2024-03-18) Yanardağ Kola, Duygu; Edebalı, Serpil; Kola, Duygu Yanardag
Synthetic dyes are extensively used in industrial areas, including plastic, textile, and food. However, they are a major environmental problem due to their negative effects on water quality and living organisms. To address one of these problems, MIL-53 (Al) is served as an adsorbent for removing indigo carmine dye, being widely used in textile industries. The synthesis of MIL-53 (Al) was carried through the hydrothermal method and different synthesis conditions were studied to find the best adsorbent to remove indigo carmine. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDS were used to assess materials. Isotherm models and kinetic models were investigated for indigo carmine adsorption, revealing that the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided best fit to data. The highest adsorption capacity was calculated as 145 mg/g. The study contributes valuable insights into the adsorption of indigo carmine by MIL-53 (Al).

Investigation of the Dye and Antibiotic Removal Efficiency of Some Metal-Organic Framework (mof) Compounds

Removal of Hexavalent Chromium (cr6+) From Aqueous Solutions by Chitosan-Halloysite Nanotubes Composite Hydrogel Beads
(Bentham Science Publishers, 2025-02-01) Edebali, S.; Kahraman, H.T.; Karakaya, M.Ç.
Background: In recent years, low-cost biomaterials have been used for sustainable applications to reduce the impact of wastewater treatment. The preparation of bio-based materials with a strong affinity for chromate plays a crucial role in the adsorption process. Methods: In this study, chitosan-halloysite nanotubes composite hydrogel beads (Ch-HNTs) were prepared for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) from aqueous solutions. Ch-HNTs hydrogel beads were generated by incorporating HNTs into chitosan using a glutaraldehyde solution to achieve efficient crosslinking. The structure of the Ch-HNTs was characterized by SEM and FTIR analysis. These novel adsorbents were then tested for the adsorption of Cr6+ in serial batch experiments. For this purpose, the effect of pH, contact time, temperature, concentration of adsorbate, and adsorbent concentration on the extent of adsorption were investigated. Results: The adsorption rate for Cr6+ was maximum at an initial pH of 2 in 60 minutes of contact time. The experimental data were fitted to Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of 72.22 mg Cr6+/g for Ch-HNTs was obtained according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Conclusion: It is proposed that Ch-HNTs can be potential adsorbents for Cr6+ removal from dilute solutions. Nonetheless, further studies on adsorbing and removing various heavy metals using these novel beads in column systems can be planned. © 2025 Bentham Science Publishers.

Adsorptive Removal of Malachite Green Dye From Aqueous Solution by Ion Exchange Resins
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023-09-09) Yanardağ, D.; Edebali, S.
The adsorption of malachite green dye by commercially available synthetic polymers Diaion CR-11 and Amberlite IRC-748 resins has been studied. The effect of the initial dye concentrations, adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, and temperature were examined. The dye adsorption mechanism for both resins was investigated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Scatchard, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models. Also, experimental data were applied to the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model best fit to the equilibrium data showed maximum adsorption capacities of 102.1 mg/g and 480.6 mg/g for Diaion CR-11 and Amberlite IRC-748, respectively. Thermodynamic studies show that the adsorption of malachite green dye increases with temperature and indicates that the adsorption process of both resins is endothermic. The negative value of change in Gibbs free energy shows spontaneous adsorption of malachite green on both resins. The polymer resins are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Mineralogical and Chemical Properties of Red Soils in the Seydişehir (konya)-Akseki (antalya) Region (türkiye)
(BZT Academic Publishing, 2022) Çelik Karakaya, Muazzez; Karakaya, Necati; Öztürk, Alican; Rüşen, Aydın; Edebali, Serpil
In the Seydişehir (Konya)-Akseki (Antalya) region, red soil formations were observed mostly in the cracks and melting spaces of the limestones and occasionally in the upper parts of the ophiolitic rocks. Lateral and vertical spreads (thicknesses) of red soils differ in the region. In the sections where the floor is observed, its thickness was determined to be between 8-10 m. The reserves of some red soils, which spread over wide areas, are in the size of several hundred million tons. Besides some physical properties of the studied red soils, mineralogical compositions were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical compositions by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and ICPMS. It has been determined that the grain size distribution of red soils is 89% sand, 11% silt+clay. The pH values of red soil samples are 7.96 and weakly alkaline. Bohmite is the most common alumina mineral among the Al-hydroxide phases in the red soil samples studied, while hematite was detected in very small amounts and in some samples. Quartz, feldspar and kaolinite are generally the silicate minerals determined in all samples. The main element oxide contents in the chemical composition of red soil samples show significant differences from bauxite. While the contents of the main element oxides Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, K2O and partially MgO with the highest content were generally between certain values, significant differences were determined in the trace element contents. Total rare earth element (REE) content was determined between 187-1274 ppm. No significant positive or negative correlation was observed between REE and major element oxides. There is a strong positive correlation (r > 0.89) between Al2O3 and Fe2O3 concentrations, and a negative correlation between total REE and CaO. The element contents of the red soils and the lack of a significant relationship between the elements, especially between REE and other elements may indicate that the origin material of these soils is different. It may show that the limestones associated with karst bauxite deposits in the region and REE content are not related. Other rocks in the region (ophiolites, schists) may have also played a role in the enrichment of the mentioned NT elements. As a matter of fact, Zr: 33-482, Sr: 52-163, Sc: 11-78, V: 84-460 ppm may indicate a different source of origin.

3D Printable Mortars with Green Materials: Sustainable Solutions with Nanocellulose
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025-11-03) Turk, Ayse; Turk, Furkan; Edebali, Serpil; Keskin, Ulku Sultan
This study aims to improve the fresh and hardened properties of 3D-printable mortars. For this purpose, mortar mixtures containing cellulose nanofibres (CNF) obtained from the green algae of the Cladophora sp., which is abundant in lakes and causes environmental pollution if not recycled, as well as commercially available cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and welan gum (WG) were prepared. The results showed that CNF was the most effective additive in improving fresh-state rheology, increasing yield stress by approximately 6 times and thixotropy by 48 times compared to the reference sample. Additionally, the CNF-modified mortar could carry a load of 50 N in the fresh state. The CNC additive showed the best mechanical performance, increasing compressive strength by 12%. Cellulosic additives were also observed to reduce shrinkage. Nanocellulose additives also increased the interlayer adhesion strength. All additives used have improved the properties of 3D-printable mortars. This study successfully produced a 3D-printable concrete/mortar additive from Cladophora sp., an environmentally detrimental waste material.

Ciprofloxacin Adsorption Performance of Co-Doped Uio-66
(Wiley, 2023-11-14) Yanardağ, Duygu; Güzel Kaya, Gülcihan; Edebali, Serpil; Kaya, Gulcihan Guzel
The presence of ciprofloxacin in various water sources, even at low concentrations, causes health risks and serious environmental pollution as well as development of antibiotic resistance. So, it is critically necessary to remove ciprofloxacin effectively from the effluent. Co-doped UiO-66 was synthesized through one-step hydrothermal method and evaluated as an adsorbent for ciprofloxacin adsorption. Ciprofloxacin adsorption was systematically investigated revealing adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics. The findings revealed that Freundlich isotherm model (maximum adsorption capacity: 45.17 mg g-1) at optimum experimental conditions (pH: 5, contact time: 90 min and adsorbent dosage: 0.3 g L-1) and acquired data were fitted using pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The ciprofloxacin adsorption was determined to be a spontaneous and endothermic from thermodynamic experiments. Effects of coexisting compound in the aqueous solutions on the Co-doped UiO-66 adsorption performance were studied using different concentrations of NaCl solution. The ciprofloxacin removal slightly decreased in the case of increasing the concentrations of Na+ ions. Regeneration of the Co-doped UiO-66 was carried out in methanol + acetic acid solution and repeated adsorption experiments were conducted to reveal reusability of the Co-doped UiO-66. Its ciprofloxacin adsorption capacity reduced to 38.0 mg g-1 after the four cycles indicating that the Co-doped UiO-66 was a reusable and potential adsorbent for ciprofloxacin adsorption process. Co-doped UiO-66 was evaluated as an adsorbent for ciprofloxacin removal from aqueous solutions. High ciprofloxacin adsorption capacity was achieved through the various adsorption mechanisms. Repeated adsorption-desorption cycles showed the Co-doped UiO-66 sample was a promising reusable adsorbent for ciprofloxacin adsorption processes.image
