    Elemental and C, O and Mg Isotope Geochemistry of Middle-Late Miocene Carbonates From the Tuz Golu Basin (central Anatolia, Turkey): Evidence for Mediterranean Incursions

    The Tuz Golu basin, the largest of the Central Anatolian Neogene basins, is a NW-SE trending fault-controlled depression and includes many subbasins, such as the Ere.gli, Ulukisla and Bor subbasins. In the basin, economically important evaporite deposits consisting mostly of halite, gypsum/anhydrite, glauberite and carbonates formed in the middle-late Miocene. The mineralogical and chemical properties and C, O and Mg isotopic compositions of the carbonate minerals that precipitated simultaneously with the other evaporite minerals were investigated using samples from boreholes to determine the precipitation conditions and paleoenvironment of the deposits. The lack of covariance between the delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of the samples and the wide range of isotopic compositional variations indicate a basin that was hydrologically open to some degree. In addition, the lack of correlations between delta O-18 values and MgO/(MgO + CaO), Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios and the wide range of variations in both delta C-13 and delta O-18 values indicate that the carbonate minerals precipitated in a lagoonal environment where seawater incursions occurred through transgressions. The delta O-18 values of the dolomite samples are higher than those of Messinian normal-salinity seawater dolomites and therefore require contributions from evaporative fluids. Additionally, the isotopic data indicate extreme fluctuations in temperature and the inflow-evaporation balance during carbonate precipitation and indicate that the evaporite minerals may have precipitated from the evaporation of seawater trapped within the basin during and after uplift of the region. The Mg isotopic compositions of magnesium-rich carbonates are partially heterogeneous, and the delta Mg-26 values are higher than the delta Mg-25 values. Some of the delta Mg-26 values are close to the delta Mg-26 values of global seawater (-0.82%) but higher than the global mean delta Mg-26 value of river water (-1.09%). The delta Mg-26 values are partially within the range of marine sediments (-3.65 to +0.52%), suggesting seawater contributions to carbonate precipitation.

    Remediation of an Aqueous Solution Contaminated With an Anionic Diazo Dye Using Natural Chabazite

    Although anionic azo dyes are frequently used in industry, most of them are poisonous, carcinogenic, and mutagenic. This study focused on the evaluation of chabazite for use in the adsorption of Congo red (CR), an anionic diazo dye, from aqueous solutions. The material used in the study had a 322.8 m2/g BET surface area. Equilibrium was reached after 4 h and the data were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The highest sorption efficiency was achieved at pH 7.3, the natural pH of the solution, but the impact was not significant, thus, chabazite can also be used efficiently throughout the range of pH 4.5–9.4. The separation efficiency reduced with increasing temperature, and according to the thermodynamic data, the process was non-spontaneous and exothermic. Adsorption capacity had a maximum value of 26.525 mg/g and was positively affected by chabazite dose but negatively affected by CR concentration. The data were well described (R2 = 0.9947) by Freundlich isotherm model. This study exhibits that chabazite can be used for the adsorption of an anionic diazo dye, i.e. Congo red. © 2024 The Authors

    Removal of Hexavalent Chromium (cr6+) From Aqueous Solutions by Chitosan-Halloysite Nanotubes Composite Hydrogel Beads

    Background: In recent years, low-cost biomaterials have been used for sustainable applications to reduce the impact of wastewater treatment. The preparation of bio-based materials with a strong affinity for chromate plays a crucial role in the adsorption process. Methods: In this study, chitosan-halloysite nanotubes composite hydrogel beads (Ch-HNTs) were prepared for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) from aqueous solutions. Ch-HNTs hydrogel beads were generated by incorporating HNTs into chitosan using a glutaraldehyde solution to achieve efficient crosslinking. The structure of the Ch-HNTs was characterized by SEM and FTIR analysis. These novel adsorbents were then tested for the adsorption of Cr6+ in serial batch experiments. For this purpose, the effect of pH, contact time, temperature, concentration of adsorbate, and adsorbent concentration on the extent of adsorption were investigated. Results: The adsorption rate for Cr6+ was maximum at an initial pH of 2 in 60 minutes of contact time. The experimental data were fitted to Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of 72.22 mg Cr6+/g for Ch-HNTs was obtained according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Conclusion: It is proposed that Ch-HNTs can be potential adsorbents for Cr6+ removal from dilute solutions. Nonetheless, further studies on adsorbing and removing various heavy metals using these novel beads in column systems can be planned. © 2025 Bentham Science Publishers.

    Tuz Gölü Havzası Güneyinde Yer Alan Neojen Yaşlı Halit Çökellerinin Kökeninin Belirlenmesi

    Konya Kapalı Havzası'nın güneyinde bulunan çalışma alanı, İç Anadolu'daki en büyük Miyosen iç havzasıdır. Bu tezin amacı, Miyosen yaşlı halit çökellerinin mineralojik özelliklerini ve kökenini belirlemektir. Bu amaçla, Tuz Gölü havzasının güneyindeki üç farklı sondajdan alınan halit örneklerinin mineralojik, jeokimyasal ve izotopik özellikleri incelenmiştir. Halitce zengin numunelerin, klor (% 60.20-61.00) ve sodyum (% 39.00-39.40) içerikleri teorik değerlere yakınken brom içeriği (5-637 ppm) geniş bir aralıkta değişmiştir. Cl-, Br-, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO42-, K+ ve Cl/Br (948-86428) oranları ve dokuz saf halit örneğinin sıvı kapanımı analizleri (K+, Mg2+, SO42-) değerlendirilerek Tuz Gölü havzasında Miyosen yaşlı halitlerin oluşumunda, farklı bileşime ve kökene sahip çözeltilerin etkili olduğu belirlenmiştir. Saf halit örneklerinin yüksek Br- (> 40 ppm) içeriği, denizel kökeni işaret ederken, düşük Br- içeriği, önceden çökelmiş halitlerin çözünmesi ve yeniden kristallenmesi ile ilişkilidir. Çalışma alanı çevresinde daha önceden çökelmiş olan jipslerin çözünmesi ve de-dolomitleşme mekanizmaları Tuz Gölü havzası ve çevresindeki halitlerin Mg2+ ve SO42- içeriklerinin yükselmesine neden olmuştur. Saf halitlerin ?81Br, ?37Cl, ?7Li ve ?11B izotop bileşimleri sırasıyla -0.82 ? 0.06, -0.80 ? 1.28, -0.70 ? 30.60 ve -14.70 ? 11.60 arasında değişmektedir. Düşük ?37Cl (-0.06 ? 0.06 ‰), düşük ?81Br (0.03 ? 0.95 ‰), yüksek ?11B (-6.40 ? 11.60 ‰) ve yüksek ?7Li (26.00 ? 30.60 ‰) değerleri, Tuz Gölü havzasında çökelen halitlerin büyük ölçüde, Orta Miyosen Optimum İklimsel (MMCO) döneminde deniz suyundan türemiş olduklarına işaret eder. Ayrıca, Tuz Gölü numunelerinin Cl-, Br-, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO42- içerikleri ve orta yükseklikte ki ?81Br (0.34 - 0.95 ‰) değerleri, havzada daha önceden çökelen halitlerin kökeninin sadece denizel olmadığını, farklı bileşim, oran veya kökenli (deniz suyu veya tuzlu su ve yeraltı suyu/tatlı su vb.) çözeltilerin karışımı olduğunu belirtir. Oldukça karmaşık farklı fiziko-kimyasal mekanizmaların etkisi altında meydana gelen bir sedimanter havza olan Tuz Gölü havzasında kimyasal ve fiziksel farklılıklara neden olan olası etkili mekanizmalar: (1) Farkı köken ve bileşime sahip çözeltilerin eskiden çökelmiş olan evaporitleri çözmesi ve yeniden kristallenmenin gerçekleşmesi, (2) de-dolomizasyon ve (3) deniz suyu girişimi olabileceği ilk defa bu çalışmada ortaya konmuştur. Ayrıca Orta Miyosende deniz seviyesinin yükselmesine ek olarak fay ve karstik boşlukların havzaya deniz suyu girişinde önemli bir rol oynadığı ilk kez bu çalışmayla tespit edilmiştir.

    Mineralogical, Chemical and Physical Properties and Suitability for Therapy of Peloids in Susurluk (balikesir, Turkey)

    The mineralogical, chemical and physical properties of the peloids used for treatment and therapy purposes in the Susurluk province of Balikesir were investigated for their suitability. Morphological characteristics, mineral species and composition and chemical composition of the peloids were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ICPEAS, respectively. The peloids are composed of clay-silt-sized material and are generally composed of clay minerals (smectite, illite and kaolinite) calcite, quartz, feldspar and rarely gypsum, halite and more rarely pyrite minerals. Due to mineralogical composition controls the physical properties (viscosity, consistency limits, surface area, abrasivity, thermal properties, etc.) of the peloids have been examined. The peloids are high plastic and semi-rigid properties, with a cation exchange capacity of 28 meq / 100g and a BET surface area vary from 17 to 34 m2 / g, show similar viscosity and thixotropic properties as well as good fluidity. It has been determined that the peloids can maintain the heat for 15-20 minutes according to the original cooling values and the cooling kinetics, but the specific heat values are low. It has been determined that abrasive capacities may be partly a risk of skin starch, and water absorption and oil absorption capacities are close to natural peloids. According to the abovementioned properties, it is found that peloids used in the baths are not suitable for grain size and low clay content, chemical composition may not cause any problem and it can be used in therapy for some muscle problems in term of heat capacities.

    Mineralogical and Chemical Properties of Red Soils in the Seydişehir (konya)-Akseki (antalya) Region (türkiye)

    In the Seydişehir (Konya)-Akseki (Antalya) region, red soil formations were observed mostly in the cracks and melting spaces of the limestones and occasionally in the upper parts of the ophiolitic rocks. Lateral and vertical spreads (thicknesses) of red soils differ in the region. In the sections where the floor is observed, its thickness was determined to be between 8-10 m. The reserves of some red soils, which spread over wide areas, are in the size of several hundred million tons. Besides some physical properties of the studied red soils, mineralogical compositions were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical compositions by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and ICPMS. It has been determined that the grain size distribution of red soils is 89% sand, 11% silt+clay. The pH values of red soil samples are 7.96 and weakly alkaline. Bohmite is the most common alumina mineral among the Al-hydroxide phases in the red soil samples studied, while hematite was detected in very small amounts and in some samples. Quartz, feldspar and kaolinite are generally the silicate minerals determined in all samples. The main element oxide contents in the chemical composition of red soil samples show significant differences from bauxite. While the contents of the main element oxides Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, K2O and partially MgO with the highest content were generally between certain values, significant differences were determined in the trace element contents. Total rare earth element (REE) content was determined between 187-1274 ppm. No significant positive or negative correlation was observed between REE and major element oxides. There is a strong positive correlation (r > 0.89) between Al2O3 and Fe2O3 concentrations, and a negative correlation between total REE and CaO. The element contents of the red soils and the lack of a significant relationship between the elements, especially between REE and other elements may indicate that the origin material of these soils is different. It may show that the limestones associated with karst bauxite deposits in the region and REE content are not related. Other rocks in the region (ophiolites, schists) may have also played a role in the enrichment of the mentioned NT elements. As a matter of fact, Zr: 33-482, Sr: 52-163, Sc: 11-78, V: 84-460 ppm may indicate a different source of origin.
