Estimation of Specific Energy and Evaluation of Roadheader Performance Using Rock Properties and Bond Work Index
(SPRINGER HEIDELBERG, 2021) Özşen, Hakan; Dursun, Arif Emre; Aras, Ali
Specific energy (SE) is defined as the amount of work required to cut a unit volume of rock and is used to estimate the performance of excavation machines. Generally, the SE value is produced from full-scale or small-scale rock cutting tests. However, these tests require expensive equipment and experienced personnel, and the testing procedure is time consuming and impractical. Therefore, for estimation of SE, this study aimed to find a solution to estimate SE using rock mechanics test results and Bond work index values (BWi), which can be produced in a more practical, less time-consuming manner and with inexpensive test equipment. Small-scale rock cutting, rock mechanics and Bond work index tests were carried out on seven rock samples, which can be grouped into two different type of rocks: marble and travertine. In addition, the instantaneous cutting rates (ICR) of a selected roadheader were calculated using SE values. Rock mechanics tests performed in this study were uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), ultrasonic velocity (V-p), Schmidt rebound hardness (R-L), corrected point load index (I-s(50)) and density (rho). The simple regression method was used to estimate SE from rock properties and BWi. As a result of this simple regression, a significant and highest correlation was found between SE vs. UCS and I-s(50). A good correlation was found between SE vs. BTS, R-L and BWi values. A moderate correlation was found between SE vs. V-p and rho.

Using Artificial Neural Networks for the Prediction of Bond Work Index From Rock Mechanics Properties
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2019-02-12) Aras, Ali; Özsen, Hakan; Dursun, Arif Emre
The resistance shown to the grinding process and energy consumption can be determined using the work index. The Bond method is widely used in design of grinding circuits, selection of comminution equipment, determination of the power requirement and performance evaluation. Therefore, it is important to predict the Bond work index (BWi) using some easy and practical rock mechanics tests without the need to use a mill. In this study, rock mechanics and Bond tests were carried out on seven different marble and travertine samples. These rock mechanics tests are uniaxial compressive strength (sigma(c)), Brazilian tensile strength (sigma(t)), ultrasonic velocity (V-p), Schmidt hardness (R-L), point load index (I-S(50)) and density (rho). The BWi value was tried to be predicted using these rock mechanics test results by the feature selection method which is one of the artificial neural networks (ANN) methods. ANN has been used successfully for years in a very broad range of area such as classification, clustering, pattern recognition, prediction, etc. It was found out that the prediction of the BWi value by sigma(c), R-L, rho and I-S(50) values is reliable based on the obtained correlation coefficients by ANN feature selection method.

Experimental Analysis of Various Deep Learning Methods for Predicting Displacements in an Open Pit Coal Mine
(Springer, 2025-09-08) Ozsen, Hakan; Kaygusuz, Berk
Slope failure is a problem that can occur on slopes formed by natural or unnatural means for various reasons and as a result, can cause serious loss of life and property. This is also crucial in open pit mines. Therefore, it is critical to constantly monitor slope deformations and predict a possible slide that may occur in the future. Predicting the initial trend behavior of a created slope is at least as important as estimating slope failure. Therefore, in this study, we tried to estimate slope stability with a small number of deformation data. In this study we aimed to compare several deep learning methods in using time series prediction with limited data. For this purpose, we applied MLP, GRU, LSTM Networks, biLSTM and a hybrid structure of CNN-RNN methods. We utilized data taken from three stations settled in an open pit mine slope and predicted the compound deformation value of x-, y- and z-direction in these slopes. The performance was compared with respect to the root mean squared error (RMSE) and coefficient of correction (R2) values. The minimum RMSE was obtained as 0.2293 and maximum R2 was reached as 0.9984 by the GRU method on the third station's data.

Investigation of Climatic Conditions in Underground Coal Mining
(SPRINGER HEIDELBERG, 2019-11-06) Çınar, İbrahim; Özsen, Hakan
Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between - 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

Machine Learning-Based Uniaxial Compressive Strength Estimation for Lignite in an Underground Coal Mine
(Springer, 2026) Mesutoglu, Mehmet; Mesutoglu, Ozgul Cimen; Solak, Ahmet; Ozsen, Hakan; Rodriguez-Dono, Alfonso; Ozkan, Ihsan
Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) is one of the most fundamental parameters used in rock mechanics and mining design; however, laboratory UCS testing is often time-consuming, costly, and impractical for continuous field applications. This study aims to develop a rapid and low-cost UCS estimation framework using two easily obtainable indices: Schmidt hammer rebound hardness (SHT) and point load strength (PLT). A total of 114 coal samples collected from the A1 panel of the & Ouml;merler Mine were used to train and evaluate four machine-learning models; multiple linear regression (MLR), regression trees (RT), support vector regression (SVR with linear, polynomial, and RBF kernels), and artificial neural networks (ANN). Model performances were assessed through 5-fold cross-validation and statistically compared using the Friedman and Nemenyi tests. The ANN model achieved the highest predictive accuracy, with an R-2 value exceeding 0.85 and the lowest error metrics among all evaluated algorithms. SVR models also produced competitive results. Statistical rank comparisons confirmed the significant superiority of the ANN model over the RT method. The findings demonstrate that reliable UCS prediction can be achieved using only SHT and PLT, offering a practical and cost-effective alternative for preliminary geotechnical characterization in mining operations. The proposed framework provides field engineers with a fast decision-support tool for strength estimation when laboratory testing is limited or unavailable.

Monitoring Unstable Slopes in an Open Pit Lignite Mine Using Arima
(SOUTHERN AFRICAN INST MINING METALLURGY, 2020) Özşen, Hakan
Slope stability is a widely studied area because of the significant consequences of slope failure. There are various factors affecting slope stability in open pit mines. and predicting the time of failure can be difficult due to the complex nature of the rock mass. Regression methods are often used in this prediction process, but they are limited in that they use a strict mathematical model. Therefore, possible future changes within the structure of a slope can be underestimated because once a mathematical model has been established to predict slope failure, it is then used indefinitely. For this reason, an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model is used in this study as a time series analysis (ISA) method for the prediction of slope failure. Data obtained from the movements of tension cracks from six out of ten established stations in Iligin open pit lignite mine of Turkish Coal Enterprises, West Lignite Enterprises (TKI-GLI) were used to predict future values. The prediction results from the ARIMA method were also compared with results from regression methods and were shown to be more successful.

Determining the Statistical Relationship Between the S20 Brittleness Index and Schmidt Hardness of Rocks
(Konya Technical University, 2019-12-04) Özşen, Hakan; Uysal, Abdullah; Dursun, Arif Emre
Determination of the brittleness of rocks is considered as an important preliminary design tool in different mining applications. The brittleness value is an important rock parameter used in the excavation and drilling of rocks. Schmidt's hardness is an inexpensive and easy-to-use surface hardness measure that is commonly used to determine the mechanical properties of rocks, such as strength, cuttability (linear and circular), and permeability. In this study, the S20 brittleness index values were determined by using NTNU model to determine the brittleness values of the rocks which was developed by Blindheim and Bruland (1998). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the S20 brittleness index and Schmidt hardness (RL) values statistically. For this purpose, Schmidt hardness tests and S20 brittleness index tests on 7 different rock samples with different strength properties were performed. Schmidt hardness test values and S20 brittleness index values were statistically evaluated and correlated with SPSS. As a result of this evaluation, it was determined that there was a strong correlation between Schmidt hardness and S20 brittleness index values.
