Mechanical and Economic Evaluation of Recycled Concrete Aggregate as Granular Road Base and Subbase Material
(American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2023-05-01) Toka, Ekrem Burak; Olgun, Murat
In this study, the usability of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) together with crushed aggregate (CA) in granular road base (GRB) and granular road subbase (GRSB) layers was investigated. Three different RCAs as RCA1, RCA2, and RCA3 were used according to their parent concrete compressive strength. The performance of the designs created by mixing three different RCAs with CA at 25%-50%-75% by mass was examined by laboratory tests [modified Proctor, California bearing ratio (CBR), permeability, resilient modulus, and plastic deformation]. CBR values for pure RCAs were higher than 100% and the CBR values were decreased for the mixture designs. Permeability coefficient (k) values of the CA and RCAs were close to each other. Resilient modulus (Mr) values were evaluated for three different models. In general, the lowest Mr values were obtained for pure RCAs, while the highest Mr value was obtained for pure CA. There was no statistically significant correlation between Mr values and CBR values. The plastic deformation (?p) value of the pure CA was significantly smaller than the ?p values obtained for the pure RCAs and mixture designs. The RCAs generally increased the ?p values. Flexible pavement thickness and cost analyses were performed for the 50CA 50RCA2 design, which was determined to be the most suitable for GRB material, 100RCA2, and 100CA designs for comparison. The 50CA 50RCA2 design reduced the GRB cost by 13% compared to using pure CA. As a result, it was determined that 50% RCA in GRB reduced the cost and had no adverse effect considering the material properties. Recycling of concrete wastes in this way can make significant contributions to reducing environmental pollution and prevent the depletion of natural resources. © 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Effects of Cement Grout Characteristics on Formation and Strength of Jet Grouting Columns
(Springer Heidelberg, 2022-03-14) Şenkaya, Alican; Toka, Ekrem Burak; Olgun, Murat
This paper presents the determination of the rheological properties of cement grouts and the examination of the model jet grouting (JG) columns produced in the laboratory. Fine-grained cement (DMFC-800), ordinary Portland cement (CEM I), natural pozzolana admixtured cement (CEM II) and blast furnace slag (BFS) admixtured cement (CEM III) types were used. Grout mixtures with various water/cement (W/C) ratios were prepared and rheological tests were performed. Effects of cement characteristics and rheological properties of cement grouts on column dimensions, soilcrete strength were researched. Columns with the largest diameter were obtained with DMFC-800 cement. The primary parameter affecting the JG column diameter was cement grain size and the secondary parameter was grout viscosity. CEM III cement provided the highest compressive strength (28.5 MPa) in the long term. DMFC-800 provided remarkable strength (2-5 MPa) even with grouts containing high amount of water (W/C = 2.0-3.0). Grout stability affected the homogeneity of the soilcrete structure.

Geri Dönüştürülmüş Beton Agregasının Yol Üst Yapısında Kullanılabilirliğinin Deneysel Olarak Araştırılması
(Konya Teknik Üniversitesi, 2019) Toka, Ekrem Burak; Olgun, Murat

Permeability and Compaction Properties of Recycled Concrete Aggregates as Granular Road Base and Sub-Base
(2019) Olgun, Murat; Toka, Ekrem Burak
Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) can be used as granular road base (GRB) and granular road sub-base (GRSB) in highway constructions. Thus, the use of RCAs which are waste materials contributes to sustainable economy. But RCAs must meet certain requirements for use in GRB and GRSB. Adequate drainage capability, which is one of these conditions, is important for draining surface water. In this study, drainage capabilities of RCAs produced from concrete from 3 different buildings were compared with crushed aggregate (CA) and natural aggregate (NA). In order to carry out the tests, 23 different designs consisting of mixture and pure forms of the materials were established. The permeability tests were carried out with falling head and constant head permeability equipment to evaluate permeability coefficients. The samples were prepared in the permeability molds by compression at maximum dry unit weight (ɣkmax) and optimum moisture content (wopt), which are the compaction parameters obtained from modified Proctor test. For this reason, wopt and ɣkmax were determined by modified Proctor test before conducting the permeability tests. As a result, it was observed that RCAs had higher wopt values and lower ɣkmax values than the NA and CA. It was determined that the permeability coefficients obtained by the permeability tests of the NA were very low and the permeability coefficients of the CA and RCAs were close to each other and higher than the NA. The fact that the RCAs had a permeability coefficient close to the CA indicates that drainage capability can be sufficient if RCAs are used in GRB and GRSB.

Strength and Compaction Characteristics of Recycled Concrete Aggregates
(2018) Toka, Ekrem Burak; Olgun, Murat
Every year, a large amount of construction and demolition wastes are produced worldwide. The use of these wastes in the granular road base (GRB) and granular road subbase (GRSB) layers contributes to sustainability. In Turkey, the necessary attention should be given to the reuse of these materials. In this study, compaction and strength properties of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) obtained from 3 different building demolitions, one natural aggregate (NA) and one crushed aggregate (CA) from Konya City/Turkey were investigated comparatively. For this purpose, Modified Proctor and unsoaked California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests were performed on the pure forms of these 5 different aggregates and the mixtures of 25% - 75%, 50% -50%, 75%- 25% ratios of RCAs with CA and NA. As a result of the Modified Proctor tests, it was found that the optimum moisture content of RCAs compared to NA and CA were high due to high water absorption of RCAs and the maximum dry unit weights were low due to low specific gravities of RCAs. As a result of the CBR tests, the CBR values of the RCAs were high enough to be compared to the CA; however, in the mixtures, a decrease in CBR values was observed. The results showed that the RCA in Turkey has some sufficient mechanical properties to be used in GRB and GRSB; however, further studies must be done.

Geri Dönüştürülmüş Beton Agregasının Esneklik Modülü ve Kalıcı Deformasyon Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi
(2022) Toka, Ekrem Burak; Olgun, Murat

Performance of Granular Road Base and Sub-Base Layers Containing Recycled Concrete Aggregate in Different Ratios
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2021-04-19) Toka, Ekrem Burak; Olgun, Murat
In this study, the usability and performance properties of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as granular road base (GRB) and granular road subbase (GRSB) material were investigated. A natural aggregate and the RCAs obtained from concretes with three different compressive strength and mixtures created by adding the RCAs to NA at the ratios of 25, 50 and 75% were used. Physical properties, modified Proctor, resilient modulus, permanent deformation, California bearing ratio (CBR), and permeability tests were carried out on all mixtures. Resilient modulus values (M-r) were obtained using three different resilient modulus models. The highest M-r value among pure RCAs was observed for RCA2 (average of 200 MPa). For the mixture samples, the highest M-r values were obtained in the mixtures containing RCA1 (average of 250 MPa). The minimum of permanent deformation value (epsilon (p) ) for the mixtures was obtained when the ratio of the RCA1 in the mixtures was 50% (epsilon (p) = 0.238%). The obtained CBR values were not related to the M-r values, and the highest CBR values were found for the pure RCAs (average of 126%). High permeability coefficient values (average of 9.973x10(-6) m/s) were obtained for the RCAs. As a result, it was more appropriate to blend the RCAs with the natural material rather than to use them in pure form. In general, it was appropriate to use 50% of RCAs in the mixtures. It was observed that if concrete compressive strength is as high as in RCA1 (18.5 MPa), RCA can be used even in the mixture at a ratio of 75%.
