Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1The Inherited Structure of the Gediz Graben (aegean Extensional Province, Turkey): Insights From the Deep Geothermal Wells in the Alasehir Sub-Basin(Springer, 2023-05-29) Gülmez, Fatma; Ercan, Hatice Ünal; Lom, Nalan; Göçmengil, Gönenç; Damcı, EmreNeogene basins/grabens along with exhumed core complexes make up the fundamental components of western Anatolia within the geologic framework of the Aegean Extensional Province. The Neogene basins are divided into two based on their orientation and contrasting lithostratigraphic packages: (1) the NE-SW basins that are dominated by materials either derived from the Menderes Massif and/or Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone-related units during the Lower Miocene and sedimentation that had mostly ended by the end of the latest Miocene, (2) E-W trending basins that are known to be devoid of Tethyan ophiolitic material and contain Miocene and Plio-Quaternary deposits. The relationship between the two sets of basins has been unclear, with some suggesting that E-W trending grabens are younger than the NE-SW trending grabens. Here, we reported results from the deep (up to 3840 m) geothermal wells from the Alasehir sub-basin of the E-W trending Gediz Graben. Our analysis reveals that the Neogene graben fill is thicker than previously documented and contains ophiolite-derived clastics at its base. We proposed that the Alasehir sub-basin has a similar early Miocene configuration as the Usak-Gure basin and the Gediz Graben represents an inherited structure of the NE-SW trending grabens.Article Multidisciplinary Insights into Zeolite and Clay Formation in Hydrothermally Altered Volcanic Rocks of Cubuk, Turkey(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Unal Ercan, Hatice; Schroeder, Paul A.; Gencoglu Korkmaz, Gulin; Ece, Omer Isik; Ciftci, Emin; Ercan, Hatice ÜnalThe present study addressed the influence of lithological variability on hydrothermal alteration processes in the Cubuk region of Ankara, recognized globally for its agate occurrences. The objective was to clarify how differing host rocks, tuff and ignimbrite in Karadana, and perlitic units in Yukariemirler, affect secondary mineral formation and alteration pathways. A combination of mineralogical (X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy) and geochemical (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, whole-rock geochemistry, delta O-18-delta D) methods was utilized to characterize alteration assemblages and fluid conditions. The alteration sequence progressed through five stages, beginning with unaltered volcanic rocks. In the second stage, smectite-group clays, particularly montmorillonite, were formed under mildly alkaline and low-temperature conditions (pH 7.5-9.0; T 43-50 degrees C). This initial clay formation was followed by zeolitization along two distinct pathways: clinoptilolite crystallized (K-rich, Si/Al similar to 4.2) in the Karadana tuff-ignimbrite units, while heulandite formed (Ca-rich, Si/Al similar to 2.7) in the perlitic host rocks of Yukariemirler. These variations are attributed to differences in host-rock composition, permeability, and hydrothermal fluid chemistry. In more advanced stages, mordenite and chabazite precipitated under progressively higher pH and temperature conditions (pH 9.5-10.0; T 70-80 degrees C). In the final stage, opal-quartz formed due to silica supersaturation triggered by a drop in pH, despite rising temperatures (pH similar to 8.5-9.0; T similar to 250 degrees C). The paragenetic sequence confirms that clay mineral formation preceded zeolitization in both zones. Variations in zeolite types reflect strong lithological and hydrochemical controls, as well as the origin of the hydrothermal fluids; clinoptilolite formation in Karadana is associated with Na- and K-rich supergene fluids, while Ca-rich hypogene fluids promoted heulandite precipitation in Yukariemirler. This study presents the first detailed paragenetic model for zeolite-clay alteration in the Cubuk volcanic system and offers new insights into post-caldera hydrothermal evolution in Central Anatolia.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 5Investigation of Gamma-Ray Radiation Shielding Properties of Zinc Borate and Paraffin Filled Sheep Wool Biopolymer Composites: Experimental and Theoretical Analysis(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2025-02-01) Karatas, Ozgul; Ercan, Hatice Unal; Altin, Mustafa; Ogul, Hasan; Bulut, FatihThe present study examines the potential of sheep wool biopolymer composites filled with zinc borate and paraffin wax additives as a gamma-ray radiation shielding material. The selected novel composite samples were prepared with varying proportions of additive materials (10, 20, 30, and 40 wt%) so that impact of the additive amount on radiation shielding could be properly analyzed. Evaluations of specimens were performed at different energy levels ranging from 20 keV to 1.3325 MeV with help of a NaI scintillation detector, MC simulation (GEANT4) and WinXCOM theoretical calculation code. Following the production of shielding samples, the characterization and structural evaluation was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE- SEM /EDX) supported by EDAX energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of additives into composite materials enhances the gamma attenuation capacity. The optimal gamma shielding performance is achieved with a 40 wt% ZnB40 composition, which exhibits superior shielding efficacy at lower gamma-ray energies. The MAC value of ZnB40 at 20 keV is about 2.7343 times higher than one of ZnB10 while it is about 1.2675 times greater at 80.9 keV. Moreover, it can be safely said that ZnB40 material can be a suitable option for insulating dentist rooms or buildings that require the use of regular aprons.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 6Experimental Study of a Micro-Scale Sloped Solar Chimney Power Plant(Korean Soc Mechanical Engineers, 2021-12-01) Güzel, Muhammed Hüseyin; Ünal Ercan, Hatice; Köse, Faruk; Unal, Recep EmreSolar chimney power plants (SCPP) are structures that have the potential to generate a significant amount of electrical energy without harming the nature. Within the scope of this study, a micro-scale sloped solar chimney power plant (MSSCPP) experimental setup with a chimney of 8 m height and a sloped collector of 6.4 m diameter was designed and constructed. The air temperature in the collector and the velocity of the air in the chimney were recorded and analyzed in detail. The results obtained from the experiments show that the effect of solar radiation on the temperature and velocity of the air is remarkable. The effect of solar radiation on the efficiency of sloped collector found to be 14.2 %. In addition, although the dimensions of the experimental setup are small, the difference between temperatures at the inlet and outlet of sloped collector are increasing up to 2.4 degrees C and air velocity at the inlet of the chimney reaches 2.2 m/s. Large-scale sloped solar chimney power plants (SSCPP) can be used to help meet the electricity demand, especially in rural areas with natural slopes. Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 16The Fuzzy Logic-Based Modeling of a Micro-Scale Sloped Solar Chimney Power Plant(KOREAN SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, 2021-02-27) Güzel, Muhammed Hüseyin; Ünal Ercan, Hatice; Önder, Ahmet; Şen, Muhammed Arif; Köse, Faruk; Unal, Recep EmreThe energy demand of world is increasing worldwide because of increasing population and developing technology. The use of environmentally friendly renewable resources is very important in providing the increasing energy needs. In the renewable energy sources, the solar energy has a strategic importance because of its huge potential and unlimited. The production of electrical energy by solar chimney power plants is one of the reliable and profitable methods. Fuzzy logic-based approaches are commonly used for modeling different systems in many fields. Also, a renewable energy system can be modelled by fuzzy definitions. In this way, it can provide efficiently and quickly theoretical estimates of systems with productive simulations. In this study, using the experimental data obtained from the micro-scale sloped solar chimney power plant in carried on scientific research project by authors, the obtaining and verifying a fuzzy logic-based model (FLBM) that can calculate the change in air velocity at turbine according to the change of radiation and temperature is presented. The air velocity at the turbine inlet is the considerable variable determining the electricity generation in a solar chimney. Thus, the output of the model is determined as this air velocity. In changes in the radiation and temperature values are defined as inputs. A two input-one output fuzzy model is obtained, in which the inference method is designed in the form of Mamdani and the membership functions in the form of the triangle, making inferences according to the rule base determined by the experience achieved from the experimentally studies. In order to investigate the accuracy of the FLBM, the simulation results and the data get from experimental setup in April 2019 are compared and evaluated. The validation of the FLBM compared to the experimental system is investigated using different error evaluation criteria. It is proved that the results of FLBM and experimental data are realized at a high rate (95.95 %) close to each other and similarly.Conference Object Origin asessment of Miocene and Recent evaporite deposits in Tuz Gölü Basin(2019) Çelik Karakaya, Muazzez; Bozdağ, Ayla; Karakaya, Necati; Ünal Ercan, HaticeArticle Volcanic and Cultural Geoheritage Potential of Erenlerdağ-Alacadağ Volcanism (SW of Konya-Türkiye)(TMMOB Jeoloji Muhendisleri Odasi, 2026) Korkmaz, Gulin Gencoglu; Ercan, Hatice UnalThe Erenlerdağ–Alacadağ Volcanic Complex (ErAVC), located in southwest Konya (Central Anatolia), represents a Neogene-aged volcanic unit covering approximately 1500 km². The EAVC is composed of volcanic products that range in composition from mafic to felsic, including lava domes, lava flows, pyroclastic fall and flow deposits, and subvolcanic intrusions such as dikes and plugs. The present study aims to identify and characterize representative volcanic geosites within the ErAVC, assess their geoheritage value, and discuss their potential for geotourism and educational development in the context of Central Anatolian Volcanic Geoheritage.Volcanic facies analysis reveals a wide range of eruptive behaviors, from the development of lava domes and lava flows and the formation of dacitic spine structures to ignimbrite-forming explosive volcanism and complex volcano-sedimentary processes, expressed across facies ranging from central/proximal to distal settings. In the proximal and medial facies, dacitic–andesitic lava flows, domes, their pyroclastic equivalents, and ignimbrite sequences display features indicative of multi-stage magma mixing, recharge events, and decompression-driven processes. Distal facies are characterized by tuff horizons, widespread ignimbrite, and sedimentary units, which clearly reflect the synchronous development of volcanic and sedimentary processes. These well-preserved successions provide rare and valuable archives for reconstructing eruption dynamics and magma chamber evolution in continental arc settings. The distribution of volcanic facies in the ErAVC documents a pronounced geomorphological contrast between high-relief areas associated with lava domes and lava flows, and lower-relief zones dominated by ignimbrites, tuff layers, and volcano-sedimentary units.Highly porous ignimbrites and tuff horizons in the medial-distal facies have facilitated settlement and construction activities throughout history, as exemplified by the rock-carved dwellings of the ancient city of Kilistra. The ancient settlement of Kilistra, located within the boundaries of the Erenlerdağ–Alacadağ Volcanic Complex (ErAVC), represents one of the rare geo-cultural heritage sites where volcanological, geomorphological, and archaeological components are integrated. The Late Hittite-period Fasıllar Monument, built upon resistant dacitic–andesitic lava flows, stands as a striking example of the integration of volcanic lithologies into the cultural landscape. In conclusion, the ErAVC is one of the most significant geosites in Central Anatolia, offering substantial potential for geoconservation, geoeducation, and sustainable geotourism. The region’s geological diversity and cultural assets serve as an “open-air laboratory” for multidisciplinary research and community engagement.Conference Object Mineralogical and Stable Isotope Properties of Carbonate Minerals in Tuz Gölü Basin (turkey): Paleoenvironment Assessment(Akdeniz University, 2018) Çelik Karakaya, Muazzez; Bozdağ, Ayla; Ercan, Hatice Ünal; Karakaya, Necati; Delikan, ArifThe study area is located south of the Tuz Gölü Basin in the Central Anatolia. The investigated carbonate minerals are deposited in the Neogene lacustrine sediments. Alternations of halite, carbonate, sulfate minerals and clay-enriched levels have been observed in the ten different drillings made in the study area. The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of carbonate minerals closely related to evaporite minerals, e.g. halite and sulfate minerals. The carbonate minerals commonly observed in the region are dolomite and magnesite which are generally micritic and parallel to bedding and also, they have reticulated structures. The thickness of the carbonate minerals precipitate ranges from mm to dm, and the carbonates have been located as a matrix around other minerals in some levels. The thick carbonate levels indicate to rise of lake level or dilution of the water in the lake. In this study, four carbonate facies have been identified as microbial carbonate facies, sparitic facies, pelloidal facies and oolitic facies. Microbial carbonate facies show quite shallow environments and enriched cyanobacteria. The facies are overlain by generally sparitic cemented peloidal limestones. The Mg/Ca ratio of carbonates is quite high and these high values can be explained by dedolomitization processes. The Sr values of the carbonates range from 115-6216 ppm. The δ18O and δ13C isotope values of the dolomite samples from TG6, TG3 and TG2 drillings range from -3.38 to +5.74 ‰, and -10.78 to +0.04 ‰, respectively. Besides, δ18O and δ13C values of magnesite-rich samples vary between 7.57 and 10.46 ‰ and -4.82 and -9.49 ‰. Isotopic values, sedimentological and geochemical data of carbonates indicate that the deposition environment has sometimes been influenced by atmospheric events, wave activity and water level changes, and also biological activities are highly effective in shapka environment.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Characterization of Clay Deposits in the Ceyhan Plain (Eastern Cilicia, Turkey): Integrated Petrographic, Mineralogical, Geochemical, and Geospatial Analysis for Provenance Studies of Ancient Ceramics(Elsevier, 2025-09-01) Haciosmanoglu, Sinem; Kibaroglu, Mustafa; Ercan, Hatice Unal; Opitz, JoachimThis study presents the results of a comprehensive multi-analytical investigations of clay deposits from the Ceyhan Plain in Eastern Cilicia, Southern Turkey, aimed at establishing a robust framework for provenance studies of ancient ceramics in the region. A total of 52 clay samples were systematically collected and analyzed using optical microscopy for petrography (OM), X-Ray powder diffraction for mineral phase analysis (XRPD), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for geochemical (LA-ICP-MS), and geographic information systems for Geospatial Analysis (GIS) to examine the compositional characteristics and define reference clay groups for archaeometric research. Briquette samples were prepared from the collected clay to facilitate direct geochemical and petrographic comparisons with archaeological ceramics and clay-based artifacts. The results demonstrate that the clay deposits are predominantly calcareous, with contribution from mafic rocks and minor input from ultramafic sources. The compositional diversity is primarily shaped by sedimentation processes associated with the Ceyhan River, while smaller drainage systems influence localized variations. Four distinct clay reference groups were identified: the Ceyhan River Clay Group, Imamoglu-Kozan Clay Group, Kadirli-Savrun Clay group, and Osmaniye-Iliksu Clay Group. These groups serve as reference materials for comparative studies of ancient ceramics enabling deeper insights into local ceramic production strategies and exchange networks within the Eastern Cilicia Plain and its surroundings. They also serve as essential materials for provenance analyses of ceramics and other clay-based artifacts in broader regional contexts, including the Mediterranean, Anatolia, and the Levant. The study further underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the integration of excavation data with landscape and systematic raw material analysis to achieve a more nuanced understanding of ancient production strategies and resource management.
