Article Reducing the Impact of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Disease by Domestic Animals and Tilapia Fish: a System Dynamics Model(Gazi Univ, 2019) Kurt, Şeyma; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanThe purpose of this paper is to seek ways in reducing incidence of vector borne disease called leishmaniasis on humans. Frequently encountered in East Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolian region of Turkey due to risk factors including poverty, malnutrition, lack of sanitation and defrostration, leishmaniasis disease is transmitted by sandflies’ (vector) bites to humans. In addition to the zooprophylaxis effect in which domestic animals acting as dead-end hosts are used to alleviate the incidence on humans, we also incorporate the Tilapia fish population into the model to observe its effect in terms of relieving the vector bites on humans. We elaborate dynamic behavior and feedback loop structure of the system under study with three blood meal hosts: rodents, humans, and domestic animals. Proposed model is simulated throughout a period of 1000 days. We conduct sensitivity analysis by changing the rates of vector biting and the number of larvae eaten by Tilapia fish which influence the transmission of the disease. Results indicate that basic reproductive number ??0 and its prevalence in humans decreases as the size of domestic animal and the sandflies larvae eaten by Tilapia fish increases.Article Citation - WoS: 48Citation - Scopus: 53A Memetic Algorithm for Joint Production and Distribution Scheduling With Due Dates(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2020-04-01) Yağmur, Ece; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanIntegration between production and distribution phases in supply chain has attracted close attention of many researchers over the last decade as companies have to juggle these activities for survival in increasingly competitive market conditions. In this paper, we study a joint production and distribution problem where a single manufacturer has committed to processing jobs (i.e., customer orders) on permutation flow-shop environment and subsequently distributing them by a single capacitated vehicle. Customers locate geographically-dispersed points and place their orders with pre-determined due dates. Since a single vehicle is available, customer orders should be consolidated in order to reduce the total trip time spent by the vehicle but this may result in failing to meet some of customer orders before their due dates. The objective is therefore minimizing the total travelling time plus total tardiness. We first develop a mixed integer linear programming to formulate the problem. Due to intractability matters, mathematical formulation suffers to find optimal solutions even in moderate number of customers. Thus, we present a memetic algorithm (MA) to find good or near-optimal solutions in an acceptable amount of time. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, we compare CPLEX results with that of the MA on a wide range of randomly generated test instances. Results indicate that MA is capable of finding solutions to optimality in a quite short time for most of the small-sized instances. For medium and large-sized instances, MA is still well-performing and yields better solutions as compared to CPLEX solutions found 3 h time limit. Publication Integrated Production and Outbound Distribution Scheduling Problem with Due Dates(2020) Yağmur, Ece; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanArticle Citation - Scopus: 1Searching for Adoption of Electric Vehicles To Our Modern Life: a Discrete Event Simulation Analysis(Sage Publications Ltd, 2024-08-03) Erdes, Hakan; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanConsidering a massive stride in improving decarbonization and eventually in reaching net zero emission goal, electrification has spread through all types of industries. Prominently, in the transportation sector, the shift from fossil fuel toward electric vehicles (EVs) has been intensely realized and the past several years have seen the proliferation of EVs on the roads. Although influx of EVs is a fact, the literature suffers to provide valuable insights related to full-scale adoption of EVs. This paper proposes a novel and comprehensive variant of charging infrastructure in which there are noncommercial, commercial, and contracted commercial EVs depending on the offered business model. EVs can request alternating current (AC) charging, direct current (DC) charging, and battery swapping, and these requests are fulfilled by fixed and mobile chargers. Having developed a discrete event simulation model of the problem at hand, we implement full factorial experimental design, through which impacts of several factors involving business model, service type, arrival rate of EVs, waiting threshold, and the number of mobile chargers are detected on critical measures ranging from queuing times to the rate and mean time of EVs exceeding waiting threshold and from total revenue to service rate and utilization rate of mobile chargers. Significant statistical findings along with possible explanations are discussed. Publication Integrated Production and Outbound Distribution Activities with Multiple Vehicles(2020) Yağmur, Ece; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanConference Object Half-Open Multi-Depot Electric Vehicle Routing Problem with Time-Dependent Stochastic Waiting Times at Recharging Station(Science and Technology Publications, Lda, 2026) Erdeş, Hakan; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanBook Part Planning and Scheduling(CRC Press, 2023-01-04) Yağmur, E.; Kesen, S.E.Along with the complexity theory, scheduling problems are investigated based on their complexity, and new methods are searched to generate efficient solutions in a reasonable time for NP-hard problems. So approximation algorithms and heuristic approaches have come to the fore in recent studies. If developments both in the problem structures and solution techniques are considered, it is clearly seen that as the problem becomes more complex, state-of-the-art methods have become insufficient, and new challenges have emerged. Thus, it is inevitable that the changing conditions with the last Industrial Revolution will make a serious challenge in the scheduling literature, and it will even enforce all previously developed methods, which can no longer be applied effectively. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Turan Paksoy and Muhammet Deveci; individual chapters, the contributors.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Estimation of Turkey’s Natural Gas Consumption by Machine Learning Techniques(Gazi Univ, 2020-03-01) Erdem, Osman Emin; Kesen, Saadettin ErhanTechnological advancements coupled with growing world population require the increasing need of energy. Natural gas is one of the most important usable energy resources. Turkey is with high external dependency on energy as it has its own limited natural and underground energy resources. Thus, in order to effectively and productively use of natural gas purchased from foreign countries and to make reliable and robust energy policies for the years ahead, it is crucial to make a reasonable and plausible prediction for natural gas consumption of Turkey. In this paper, we estimate the natural gas consumption using machine learning techniques on the basis of real monthly data representing natural gas consumption of Turkey between the years 2010 and 2018. The performances of machine learning techniques involving Artificial Neural Networks, Random Forest Tree, Regression, Time Series and Multiple Seasonality Time Series are compared in predicting the natural gas consumption of Turkey. Experimental results show that among the five techniques, artificial neural networks produce the best estimation, having the lowest mean square errors, followed by regression method. Time series shows the worst performance among all the techniques.
