Wake Dynamics of a Rotating Cylinder With Cactus-Shaped Surface Elements
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2026-03-01) Ispir, Murat; Goktepeli, Ilker; Yagmur, Sercan; Aksoy, Muharrem Hilmi
Flow controls have been applied to a cylinder for a Reynolds number of Re = 2 x 103. The results have been procured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Rotation rates have been considered up to alpha = 1.26 as active control. Apex angles of cactus-shaped surfaces from beta = 7.5 degrees to beta = 45 degrees have been evaluated as passive control. Maximum streamwise values have been observed in regions externally to the wake. Minimum values have been recorded within wakes. Positive cross-stream values have been observed over stationary cylinders. However, these were in the far wake regions. In contrast, negative values have been detected below the stationary cylinders, with these readings occurring over the far wake regions. Beyond influence of apex angles, rotational rates also affected the spatial cluster distributions. Rotation changed the number and distributions of foci and saddle points. Analysis of fluctuating streamwise and cross-stream components revealed two distinct clusters and only one cluster, respectively. As apex angles and rotation rates increased, clusters tended to converge towards the cylinders. These were indicative of dominance stemming from wake and separated flows. It led to two clusters of Reynolds stress correlations. Apex angle impact on vorticity is comparatively limited. Influence of rotational dynamics proved to be more pronounced. Consequently, two vortical structures have been discerned with the positive ones emerging as more dominant because of the rotation. To sum up, the overall effects of active control are more overarching than those attained by passive ones.

A Comparison of Rans-Based Turbulence Modeling and Piv Experiments for Flow Over a Simplified Road Vehicle
    (Gazi Universitesi, 2023-01-06) Aksoy, M.H.; Okbaz, A.; Yaǧmur, S.; Doǧan, S.
The aerodynamic forces on road vehicles and flow structures around them result from complex interactions between fluid and structure. Ahmed body is a simplified car model created to demonstrate and simplify the flow around real-size ground vehicles. In this study, the flow structure on the wake region of Ahmed body with different slant angles (Θ=15°, 25°, and 35°) was investigated. Experimental studies were conducted in a water channel by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The freestream velocity was set to 0.2 m/s, and the Reynolds number defined by the characteristic length of the Ahmed body was 4.16×104 for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and PIV experiments. CFD simulations were performed using three different turbulence models: realizable k-ϵ, RNG k-ϵ, and SST k-ω, and the results were compared to experiments. The results are presented with different flow features such as time-averaged velocity vectors and velocity contours, streamline topology, vorticity, and Turbulence Kinetic Energy. The closest results to the experiments were obtained by the SST k-ω turbulence model for all slant angles of the Ahmed body. In addition, the drag coefficient is found to be 0.37 for all slant angles analyzed by SST k-ω turbulence models, which are also close to the results in the literature. © 2023 Gazi Universitesi Muhendislik-Mimarlik.

Numerical Evolution of Unsteady Wake Characteristics of H-Type Darrieus Hydrokinetic Turbine for a Hydro Farm Arrangement
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2021-05-01) Yağmur, Sercan; Köse, Faruk
In this study, the CFD method is carried out in the wake region of an H-type Darrieus hydrokinetic turbine. The hydrodynamic investigation was examined with symmetric and non-symmetric foil shape to maximize output power coefficient and wake recovery. The SST (Shear Stress Transport) k-? turbulence model was used on 2-D and 3-D unsteady numerical analyses. The obtained power coefficients from 2-D and 3-D analyses at different Tip Speed Ratios (TSR) were validated by comparing with the experimental data from the literature. As the experimental study, the maximum power coefficient was obtained at TSR=1.05 for a 3-D analysis of the NACA0018 foil configuration of the hydrokinetic turbine. It is found that the results of 2-D and 3-D calculated by the SST k-? are in good agreement with the experimental data in terms of power coefficients curve trend at investigated TSR range between 0.9?1.4. The difference between the power coefficient results of 3-D and experimental data varies between 1.8-11% ranges. The performance and flow characteristics of the wake region were also compared in detail for different foil by CFD. Therefore, the SST k-? model can be preferred as an acceptable model to analyze the performance and flow characteristics of hydrokinetic turbines.

Turbulence Modeling Approaches on Unsteady Flow Structures Around a Semi-Circular Cylinder
(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2020-03-01) Yağmur, Sercan; Doğan, Sercan; Aksoy, Muharrem Hilmi; Göktepeli, İlker
This paper presents the flow field around a Semi-Circular Cylinder (SCC), a basic geometry for fluid mechanics, obtained numerically by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Reynolds number of 3.2 x 10(4). Time-averaged flow characteristics such as vorticity, velocity fields with streamline patterns, Reynolds stress correlations, Turbulence Kinetic Energy (TKE), pressure and drag coefficients have been examined by using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) turbulence models. Several RANS approaches with turbulence modeling including SST k-omega, k-epsilon and their derivatives were used, while in the LES simulations, the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model was employed. The obtained results of the present study have been compared with an experimental study from the open literature. The results of the investigation showed that when numerical findings are compared to experimental ones, the results of LES and DES turbulence models were found to be more consistent than those obtained by using k-epsilon and SST k-omega models. Time-averaged flow patterns have been found to be considerably symmetric with respect to the axis passing through the end of the curved surface of the SCC. The deviation of LES and DES results, and experimental results was less than 7% in terms of the drag coefficient.

Optimizing 3d Guide Vanes To Minimize Secondary Flow and Energy Loss in Turbulent Flow Through a 90-Degree Bend
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2025-03-01) Yagmur, Sercan
The bend is one of the most essential components in a piping system, as it significantly influences the overall flow behavior and system efficiency. Its design and performance directly affect pressure loss, flow separation, and turbulence. Therefore, this study aims to numerically investigate the flow structure around a 90 - degree bend and demonstrate the effectiveness of optimized guide vanes in improving flow characteristics. The numerical analyses were performed by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations using the SST k - omega turbulence model at Reynolds number Re = 3 x 104 in ANSYS-Fluent. Inserting optimized vanes significantly reduced flow separation, secondary flows, and turbulence, leading to lower energy loss and enhanced system efficiency. The use of optimized guide vanes resulted in several improvements: a noticeable shift in the flow separation point, significantly reduced secondary flow regions, and enhancement in the uniformity of axial velocity. The optimized vanes also broke high-intensity vortex cores into weaker, more stable formations, resulting in reduced turbulence by up to 40%. Pressure distribution was improved, and local resistance was reduced by over 38% with the 3D -OGV configuration. These improvements make the optimized guide vanes a practical and cost-effective solution for engineering applications.

Improvement of Turbulent Flow in a Bend Using Rotational Guide Vane: a Shape Optimization
(American Institute of Physics Inc., 2023-10-01) Yagmur, S.; Gumus, M.S.; Dogan, S.; Kalyoncu, M.
The present study aims to minimize velocity disruption using rotational guide vane (RGV) before the 90° pipe bend where the curvature ratio is r/D = 1.0 at Re = 3 × 104. The combination of computational fluid dynamics and genetic algorithm is used as a tool for the geometric optimization of RGV. The SST k-ω turbulence model was preferred in flow analysis. The number of blade, the blade angle, and the location of RGV are the geometric parameters to be optimized. A new evaluation method of the velocity distribution after the bend is proposed. The objective function is defined as velocity distribution mean squared error that is based on the comparison of the velocity distribution on the cross section after the bend with the fully developed flow in a straight pipe under the same conditions. As a result of a series of optimization processes, velocity distribution at the 90° bend exit is compared between optimized RGV and without guide vane. The results show that the optimized RGV improves velocity distribution at the bend exit. Compared to the without guide vane case, the optimized RGV has delayed flow separation from α = 37° to 56°, and the flow reattachment point moves from x/D = 0.5 to 0 at the bend exit. Thanks to optimized RGV, the counter-rotating Dean vortices merged to form a single vortex at the center of the pipe. In addition, significant reduction in turbulent kinetic energy was observed, approximately 50% when using the optimized RGV compared to the without guide vane case. © 2023 Author(s).

Experimental Study on Cylinder Wake Control Using Forced Rotation
    (Elsevier B.V., 2024-03-01) Aksoy, M.H.; Yagmur, S.; Dogan, S.; Goktepeli, I.; Ispir, M.
The study focused on the flow over a rotating circular cylinder in the context of flow control. Particle Image Velocimetry was employed to examine flow characteristics at 2.5 × 103 ≤ Re ≤ 10 × 103. The rotation rates (α) were considered up to 1.57. The mean drag coefficients (CD‾) and Strouhal numbers (St) were examined. The vortex formation length was obtained as approximately 2.1 times the cylinder diameter for α = 1.57. For the stationary cylinder, the length was 1.2 times the diameter from Re = 2.5 × 103 to Re = 10 × 103. Forced rotation enhanced the momentum for the boundary layer and postponed the flow separation on the upper side of the body, leading to flow attachment at α = 1.57. The values decreased from CD‾ = 1.029 to CD‾ = 0.907 as α increased from 0 to 0.39 due to the shrinkage of the wake at Re = 10 × 103. Drag reduction was 3.5 % for α = 0.13, 5.7 % for α = 0.26, and 11.8 % for α = 0.39 thanks to active flow control. The St was attained as 0.17 ≤ St ≤ 0.21 for Re varied, while it remained relatively stable for different α values at the same Re. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
