Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 20Investigation of Reinforcement Corrosion Effects in Rc Columns Produced With Blast Furnace Slag and Fly Ash Under Reversed-Cyclic Lateral Loading Tests(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2021-10-01) Koçer, Mustafa; Boğa, Ahmet Raif; Öztürk, MuratCorrosion, which threatens reinforced concrete structures throughout their service life, adversely affects the earthquake performance of the structures. For countries located in an active earthquake zone, it is of great importance to investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete structures exposed to corrosion damage under lateral load. For this purpose, the effect of the use of blast furnace slag (BFS) and fly ash (FA) in certain proportions by weight of CEM I 42.5R cement on the reinforcement corrosion inside the RC column and the positive/ negative contribution to the behavior of the columns under lateral load were experimentally investigated. Within the scope of this study, firstly three RC column specimens without any mineral admixture were produced as CONTROL series. In the mineral admixture series, a total of 12 RC column specimens, 3 from each series, were produced by using 20% and 40% BFS, 10% and 20% FA of the cement amount instead of cement, respectively. One of the three columns produced for each series was selected as a reference, and the remaining two-column specimens were exposed to corrosion under constant voltage until theoretically 10% and 30% weight losses were achieved, respectively, using the Faraday Equation in the reinforcements. After the accelerated corrosion tests, the RC columns were tested under reversed-cyclic lateral loading reflecting the earthquake effect. Experimental results show that the use of mineral admixtures in concrete production reduces the risk of corrosion of reinforced concrete elements and improves earthquake behavior.Article Citation - WoS: 24Citation - Scopus: 27Determination of Moment, Shear and Ductility Capacities of Spiral Columns Using an Artificial Neural Network(ELSEVIER, 2019-11-01) Koçer, Mustafa; Öztürk, Murat; Arslan, M. HakanIntelligent systems are frequently used to solve difficult and complex problems in today's world. Especially in the discipline of civil engineering, much research has been conducted with the help of intelligent systems. The objective of this study is to identify the moment and shear force capacities of reinforced concrete spiral columns and their displacement ductility values by using an algorithm based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). In the study, 86 different spiral column experiments tested in the literature were compiled, and the moment and shear force capacities obtained through the experiments were arranged at a certain level. In addition, the ductility values of the tested columns were calculated using graphical experimental data. The output layer consists of four neural network models, which are ANN(1) (with three output neurons), ANN(2), ANN(3), and ANN(4) (with one output neuron), and moment, shear force capacity, and displacement ductility parameters were obtained, respectively. According to results of this study, it was observed that moment and shear force capacities of spiral columns could be particularly well estimated using ANN. However, it was found that the estimation success of ANN for displacement ductility was not sufficient.Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 21Multifunctional Behavior of Composite Beams Incorporating Hybridized Carbon-Based Materials Under Cyclic Loadings(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2022-01-01) Öztürk, Oğuzhan; Koçer, Mustafa; Ünal, AlptuğThe investigation was performed on the cyclic self-sensing behavior of reinforced composite beams produced with carbon fiber (CF) and carbon black (CB) in a hybridized form. Prior to the investigation, CFs and CBs were individually used in small-scale specimens at different ratios. The electrical properties were tailored by binary using of CFs and CBs for the improved self-sensing functionality. After evaluation of electrical and mechanical properties, self-sensing reinforced composite beams were produced with a span/effective depth ratio of 2.2. Repetitive loading and unloading cycles within elastic and plastic range were separately evaluated and applied for the developed composite beams. Beams were tested up to 30% and 70% of their ultimate flexural strength for the cyclic loadings within elastic and plastic range, respectively. Engineering properties and self-sensing assessments were simultaneously performed. Experimental findings revealed that developed composite beams provided a reversible piezoresistive behavior under plastic regime although it was partially possible under the elastic regime. Only beams coupled with hybrid carbon-based materials were able to repetitively self-sense damages between %30 and %70 of the total applied load. Carbon-based materials made a slight contribution to the engineering properties of beams as also validated by finite element analysis.Conference Object Vertical Equivalent Earthquake Load and Time History Earthquake Analysis on a Sample Building(2022) Akay, Büşra Selvi; Ünal, Alptuğ; Koçer, MustafaSpectral acceleration values that will affect the structure during an earthquake are obtained from the design acceleration spectra in the regulations, and the earthquake loads that will affect the structure are determined by the dynamic and static methods in the regulations. Although dynamic methods are more realistic and more difficult to understand, they are applied on all existing buildings if a sufficient number of natural vibration modes and their contributions reach the limit values specified in the regulations. Static methods, on the other hand, are obtained by calculating the spectral acceleration value determined depending on the dynamic feature of the structure, depending on the mass of the structure, and distributing it as a static load, taking into account the first mode of the structure. Compared to dynamic methods, there are limitations of usage areas and building height classes. In the regulations, in order to make the design earthquake calculation simpler, they suggest static methods as the design spectrum and liken it to the dynamic method. The main purpose of this study is to compare the vertical earthquake analysis required according to the structural defects defined in TEC 2018 according to the code design spectrum and linear time history analysis. According to TEC 2018, static and dynamic earthquake load analyzes were carried out on buildings with different overhang rates. It has been observed that the structural results according to the dynamic lateral load analysis are quite low compared to the assumptions in the static method. The regulation remains on the safe side in calculating the vertical earthquake force with the static earthquake load analysis.Conference Object Examination of the Vertical Earthquake Force on a Sample Building With Different Outputs According To Tec2018(2022) Akay, Büşra Selvi; Ünal, Alptuğ; Koçer, MustafaThe concept of vertical spectrum started to be implemented in Turkey with the Turkish Building Earthquake Code 2018 (TEC 2018) regulation. Before this regulation, earthquake analysis was carried out under horizontal loads with only the horizontal spectrum in buildings and it was predicted to stay on the safe side with the axial load limitation made on the columns. In TEC 2018, vertical earthquake analysis is performed depending on the structural defects in the structures. In this study, vertical earthquake analyzes were carried out on building samples with different ratios of cantilever overhangs. During these analyses, the vertical earthquake acceleration assumption made in the earthquake code and the analysis results obtained from the vertical earthquake spectrum were examined. For this purpose, firstly, horizontal earthquake forces under equivalent earthquake force, axial load levels on the columns and sectional effects and displacements on the cantilever supports were obtained on the structures. These results were compared with the data obtained from the vertical spectrum analysis with the response spektrum method, which is the dynamic analysis. The results obtained show that the assumptions made in the equivalent earthquake load method are on the safe side.Conference Object Piezo-Resistivity of Cement-Based Mortars Doped With Carbon Black and Carbon Fibers for Self-Sensing Behavior(2021) Öztürk, Oğuzhan; Ünal, Alptuğ; Koçer, MustafaThe efficient use of carbon-based materials is of a challenge for the advanced self-sensing behavior of cement-based mortars. This study deals with the dispersion of the carbon-based materials and investigating the self-sensing response by using conductive fillers. To do this, carbon black (CB) and carbon fibers (CF) were used cement mortars to evaluate the piezo-resistivity response. Dispersion of the conductive fillers was achieved by using sodium hydroxide as surfactant. Reference specimens were produced and comparison was made with the specimens doped with CB and CF. Experimental work reveals that CB and CF enabled superior relative change in electrical resistivity of composites. However, CF was more promising than CB in terms of achieving higher piezo-resistivity. In addition to non-structural functionalities, mechanical properties of developed mixtures were also evaluated. The use of CF provided higher flexural strength compared to reference and CB-bearing specimens. On the other hand, carbon-based materials made a negligible contribution to the compressive strength of the cement-based mortars. Conference Object Comparison of Tec 2018 and Tec 2007 According To İzmir Earthquake Acceleration Record(2021) Koçer, Mustafa; Öztürk, Oğuzhan; Ünal, AlptuğSignificant changes were made with Turkey Earthquake Building Regulations published in 2018. However, when the building stock in our country is examined, it is seen that most of the buildings are built according to the old regulations. Similarly, there are buildings designed in accordance with old and new regulations in İzmir province. In this study, a building was modelled and analyzed with time-domain based on the acceleration records of İzmir Earthquake (31.10.2020) according to both Turkey Building Earthquake Regulations in 2007 and 2018. Analyzes were made with a nonlinear structural analysis programand the differences between the two earthquake regulations were evaluated in terms of Izmir earthquake. In the TEC 2007 regulation, since the design spectral acceleration values in the tail part of the spectrum curve after TB are higher than the TEC 2018 regulation, similar results were obtained in the base shear force value.Article Analytical Study on the Effect of Corrosion To the Construction Performance(2019) Koçer, Mustafa; Öztürk, Murat; Boğa, Ahmet RaifCorrosion is one of the most important factor to achieve in completing the service life of reinforced concrete structures also cause significant losses in energy damping capacities of structures. In this study, the reinforced concrete column designed in ½ geometrical scale was subjected to accelerated corrosion test for 26.5 days under 1 ampere constant current. As a result of the experiment, weight loss and strength reductions was obtained. Loss of strength in reinforcement due to corrosion damage was obtained with experimental procedure. Loss of cross section and reduction of compressive strength of concrete were obtained with empirical formulas in the literature. Thanks to this data, 3 different scenarios applied on a sample building in Hatay province. Static pushover analyzes of the sample building designed in accordance with the regulations were carried out with Sap 2000 program under the specified corrosion scenarios. The load-displacement curves obtained by the scenarios are compared with the curves of the reference building. As a result of the comparisons, it was observed that corrosion damage caused significant loss in horizontal load carrying capacity of the building. The corrosion scenarios show that corrosion in columns or beams changes collapse modes of the structure.
