CONODONT BIOSTRATIGRAPHY OF UPPER DEVONIAN TEPHRA BEARING DEPOSITS IN THE İSTANBUL-ZONGULDAK TERRANE, NW TURKEY: INSIGHTS ON THE KELLWASSER EVENTS
(Univ Studi Milano, 2024-09-24) Atakul-Ozdemir, Ayse; Turkmenoglu, Asuman Gunal; Goncuoglu, M. cemal; Bozkaya, Omer; Okuyucu, Cengiz
New evidence for a biostratigraphic assessment of the limestone succession comprising K-bentonite levels exposed in the Y & imath;lanl & imath; Formation of the Istanbul-Zonguldak Terrane are provided from conodonts at the Gavurp & imath;nar & imath; quarry in Bart & imath;n area (NW Turkey). The succession depicts a shallow marine, nearshore facies setting that comprises rare and low diversity conodont associations mainly exemplified by the species of Ctenopolygnathus, Icriodus and Polygnathus. Conodont faunas from the lower part of the section are of late Frasnian age, including the taxa Icriodus subterminus Youngquist, 1947, Polygnathus aff. xylus Stauffer, 1940, Icriodus iowaensis iowaensisYoungquist & Peterson, 1947 and Ctenopolygnathus brevilaminus Branson & Mehl, 1934, and the upper part is assigned to early Famen-nian marked by the first appearance of Icriodus cornutus Sannemann, 1955. The local biostratigraphic framework of the Y & imath;lanl & imath; Formation is correlated with the upper Frasnian Lower rhenana to the lower Famennian Middle triangularisstandard conodont zonations. Considering the described species, the Frasnian-Famennian boundary corresponds to a slight change in conodont fauna and is assigned within the local Icriodusiowaensis iowaensis Zone. Accordingly, the novel K-bentonite age data potentially indicates the evidence for the Kellwasser events in northern Turkey, improving paleogeographic correlations of the Istanbul-Zonguldak Terrane with other terranes in Laurasia and Peri-Gondwana.

Güney Türkiye’de Hadim Napı Serpuhoviyen-başkıriyen Geçişini İçerisine Alan İstiflerdeki Oolitik Kireçtaşları ve Bunların Biyostratigrafik Özellikleri
    (2019) Akbaş, Melikan; Okuyucu, Cengiz
Toros kuşağının allokton birimlerinden biri olan Hadim Napı, Orta(?)-Geç Devoniyen-Geç Kretase zaman aralığına ait genellikle silisiklastik ara katmanlı sığ deniz karbonatlardan oluşur. Hadim Napı Serpuhoviyen-Başkıriyen istifleri Orta Toroslarda iki farklı kesitte (Yassıpınar and Gölbelen) çalışılmıştır.

Biostratigraphy of Lower Permian Foraminiferal Assemblages From Platform-Slope Carbonate Blocks Within the Mersin Melange, Southern Turkey: Paleogeographical Implications
(ELSEVIER FRANCE-EDITIONS SCIENTIFIQUES MEDICALES ELSEVIER, 2020-04-01) Okuyucu, Cengiz; Tekin, U. Kağan; Bedi, Yavuz; Sayit, Kaan
The Mersin Melange (MM) as a part of the Mersin Ophiolitic Complex in southern Turkey is a sedimentary complex including blocks and tectonic slices within a Late Cretaceous matrix. Two blocks (Keven and Cingeypinari) within the MM originated from the northern branch of Neotethys (Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Ocean) and have been studied in detail using foraminiferal assemblages to correlate them with coeval successions in the Taurides and to approach the Early Permian evolution of the northern branch of the Neotethys. The Keven block includes mainly slope deposits (poorly-sorted carbonate breccia and fossiliferous calcarenite) and dated as late Asselian-Sakmarian, whereas the Cingeypinari block consists of platform deposits (fossiliferous platform carbonate and quartz sandstone alternation) assigned to the Sakmarian-early Artinskian. These Early Permian Cingeypinari and Keven blocks from the Beysehir-Hoyran Nappes are biostratigraphically well correlated to the northerly originated Hadim nappe and its equivalents in the Tauride Belt. Considering recent studies on the Mersin Melange, a possible mantle plume existed during the Late Carboniferous-Early Permian time interval along the northern Gondwanan margin. This event led to the opening of the northern Neotethys and deposition of the pelagic Karincali sequence with volcanic material in the basinal conditions. The data presented suggest that the Keven block relates to the slope and the Cingeypinari block to platform conditions deposited as a lateral equivalent of the Karincali sequences during the Early Permian. Rectogordiopsis Okuyucu & Akbaş, 2026, gen. nov.
    (2026) Akbaş, Melikan; Okuyucu, Cengız
Genus Rectogordiopsis gen. nov. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: 53AA5ECF-1580-4176-BF8A-9C4BE232DCD5 Type species Rectogordiopsis kamuranaeformis gen. et sp. nov. Etymology From the Latin ‘ rectus ’ (= ‘straight’) because of the many planispiral coils and the Latin ‘ gordiopsis ’ because of the similarity to the genus Hemigordiopsis Reichel, 1945. Description Test free, very large and globular. Proloculus spherical followed by a tubular undivided chamber. First whorls numerous tightly streptospiral and following whorls planispiral involute. Flosculinisation well developed. Thick porcelaneous wall often neosparitized with perforations (comb teeth-shaped). Aperture simple terminal. Comparison Rectogordiopsis gen. nov. differs from the other genera of the Neodiscidae by the type of coiling (initially glomospiral and finally planispiral) involute test, the well-developed flosculinisation, the long streptospiral initial stage and devoid of buttresses. It differs from the morpholocically closest genus Kamurana by a larger and more globular test with planispiral involute coiling without any oscillation in the last whorls. It is also similar to Globidiscus but differs by the last whorls not tapering. Hemigordiopsis can be easily differentiated from the new genus Rectogordiopsis by the varying test shape (globular to discoidal), the very dark or even black porcelaneous wall, the absence of a comb teeth-shaped structure on the wall and a very low and broad lumen. Included species Rectogordiopsis kamuranaeformis gen. et sp. nov., R. ovaliformis gen. et sp. nov. Range and distribution Middle Permian (late Capitanian) of the Elmadağ Olistostrome, Ankara City, Central Türkiye.

Bunlar; Depratina turani n. sp., Aljutovella typica n. sp., Tikhonovichiella praetikhonovichi n. sp., Beedeina minuta n. sp., Beedeina tauridiana n. sp., Praefusulinella guvenci n. gen. n. sp., Praefusulinella okuyucui n. gen. n. sp., Praefusulinella rhombiforma n. gen. n. sp., Praefusulinella tekini n. gen. n. sp., Fusulinella obtusa minuta n. sub. sp., Fusulinella absoluta n. sp. ve Fusulinella propriaforma n. sp'dir. Biyostratigrafik çalışmalarda, Hadim Napı Başkıriyen ve Moskoviyen istiflerinde dokuz fusulin zonu tanımlanmıştır. Bu zonlar alttan üste doğru, Plectostaffella jakhensis-Eostaffella postmosquensis postmosquensis-Eostaffella pseudostruvei angusta Topluluk Zonu, Plectostaffella bogdanovkensis-Plectostaffella varvariensis İlk Görünüm Zonu, Pseudostaffella antiqua-Pseudostaffella sofronizkyi İlk Görünüm Zonu, Staffellaeformes staffellaeformis-Staffellaeformes parva parva İlk Görünüm Zonu, Tikhonovichiella tikhonovichi-Verella spicata İlk Görünüm Zonu, Aljutovella aljutovica-Solovievaia ovata ovata İlk Görünüm Zonu, Priscoidella priscoidea-Eofusulina triangula İlk Görünüm Zonu, Fusulinella vozhgalensis devexa-Beedeina schellwieni İlk Görünüm Zonu ve Fusulinella bocki bocki İlk Görünüm Zonu'dur.

Carnian (upper Triassic) Lavas and Tuffites From the Mersin Melange: Evidence for Intraoceanic Arc Rifting in the Northern Neotethys
(UNIV CHICAGO PRESS, 2020-09-01) Sayit, Kaan; Bedi, Yavuz; Tekin, U. Kağan; Okuyucu, Cengiz
In Anatolia, the northern branch of Neotethys is represented by Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan (IAE) Ocean, whose fragments and associated continental entities are preserved in the IAE Suture. However, the traces of this northerly located ocean are not solely bound to the IAE Suture, but can also be found further to the south. The Mersin Melange, situated in southern Turkey, is such a place that preserves the southerly transported remnants of the northern Neotethys. The Mersin Melange essentially displays block-in-matrix features, with blocks/slices of different age and lithological characteristics embedded in a clastic matrix. Within the melange, the Degirmenocagi region consists of a volcano-sedimentary sequence of middle Carnian age, which is characterized by lavas and tuffites interbedded with pelagic sedimentary lithologies. The lavas are chemically of basaltic/basaltic-andesitic composition, whereas the tuffites are of rhyolitic composition. Both lavas and tuffites display negative Nb anomalies, suggesting the involvement of subduction-related components. The high Zr/Nb and low Nb/Yb ratios (compared with normal mid-ocean ridge basalt [N-MORB]) imply a variably depleted mantle source, which has experienced previous melt extraction. The ratio-based melting systematics reflects melt generation largely dominated by spinel-facies melts. The overall geological and geochemical characteristics of the Degirmenocagi sequence suggest an oceanic backarc setting during the Carnian, which may have developed by the rifting of the Sorgun Arc. Although this new finding shows that the Triassic intraoceanic subduction is not uncommon in the Neotethys, it also strengthens a pre-Liassic opening of the northern domain (i.e., the IAE Ocean) and may further explain the longevity of the Middle-Late Triassic intraoceanic subduction in the northern Neotethys.
