Estimation of Fatal Risks of Road Construction Workers in Occupational Accidents
(2021) Bilim, Atiye; Çelik, Osman Nuri
Millions of people die every year because of fatal work accidents and diseases. When the accident rates of the construction industry in the world are analyzed, it is seen that these rates support the hazard situation of the sector. The construction sector is important for developing countries, but it also has a significant share, especially in fatal work accidents. Risks in the construction sector vary according to the project. Work accidents occurring in road construction have a significant share in the construction sector. In this study, 14910 work accident data in road constructions between 2013-2016 years are examined for Turkey. The parameters affecting the severity of the accident in the sector were determined. A score table was created in which road workers could determine their fatal risk. Thus, the results that contribute to the selection of employees suitable for the job and the adaptation process of the employee were derived.

The Effects of Oversized/Overloaded Vehicles Which Is Operating Project Lojistics Field on Highway Flexible Pavements and Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (spmt) Example

Estimating the Possibility of Workday Loss Accidents in Road Construction
(Croatian Soc Civil Engineers-Hsgi, 2024-01-01) Bilim, Atiye; Çelik, Osman Nuri
Worksite hazards and occupational accidents in road construction pose significant risks to worker safety and productivity, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to workday loss. This study aimed to determine the probability of workday loss owing to occupational accidents among road workers based on individual and occupational characteristics. Univariate statistical analysis, cross-tabulation, and binary logistic regression were used for data analysis. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted using data from 5,519 occupational accidents during road construction between 2013 and 2016. The independent variables included the workers' age, sex, marital status, occupational health and safety (OHS) training, experience, education, occupation, accident season, accident location, and material causing the accident. An equation was derived to estimate the probability of workday loss given a worker's experience, OHS education, season, location, and the material involved. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the applicability of logistic regression analysis in determining the probability of workday loss owing to occupational accidents. This approach can be used across different sectors, reducing workday loss accidents and associated costs while promoting worker health and sustainable production policies.

Effect of Polyolefin Modified Bitumen on Marshall Stability
(Afyon Kocatepe Üniversitesi Fen ve Mühendislik Bilimleri Dergisi, 2020-03-17) Akmaz, M. Mevlüt; Çelik, Osman Nuri
It is possible to improve the performance of the hot mix asphalt (HMA) by improving the properties of the materials (aggregate, bitumen) used in the HMA or by the addition of some special materials. In this study; polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) waste plastics were co–pyrolyzed at a temperature range of 300–350 °C. 2, 4, 5 and 6 % modified bitumen were made by using the solid product (char–additive) obtained from co–pyrolysis and pure 50/70 penetration grade bitumen. RV (rotational viscometer) tests were applied to pure and modified bitumens at different temperatures (60–165 °C) and the optimum rate of PP–HDPE additive was determined to be 5 %. Then; two different HMA sample series were prepared with Marshall apparatus using pure and 5 % PP–HDPE modified bitumen. For Marshall Mix design, sample series were formed at bitumen rates 3.5; 4; 4.5; 5 and 5.5 % and four HMA samples were produced at each bitumen rate. The samples were weighed in water, dry and saturated surface–dry. The heights of the samples were measured and the Marshall stability and flow values were determined by applying a load at a certain speed (50 mm/min). As a result; compared to the pure HMA, it was observed that the Marshall stability of the modified HMA increases between about 8.5 and 13 %.

Assessment of Work Accidents in Highway, Street and Bridge Construction
(International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference, 2018-11-20) Bilim, Atiye; Çelik, Osman Nuri
Occupational health and safety is an important work discipline that must be included in the working life. Especially, developed countries have been able to place this discipline in working life, while developing countries have still problems. These problems take place both in terms of legislation and practice. The situation is similar to that of developing countries, in Turkey. The construction sector is in line with the development status of a country. The construction sector contributes both directly and indirectly to the country's economy. It has become indispensable for the economy of a country with its share in employment and it stimulates production of goods and services related to the sector. The construction sector is not just about building constructions. We also need bridges, metros and high-speed train lines. Transports have a major contributor to the development of a country. In parallel with technological developments, large investments related with transports become increase. Due to the revival in this sub-sector, the number of work accidents has also tended to increase. Therefore, the work accidents in the highway, street and bridge constructions, which are the sub-activities of the construction sector, must be examined. In this study, work accidents in the sector were analyzed for Turkey and U.S. Also, the share of the sector in total work accidents and construction accidents were determined for Turkey and U.S. The causes of fatal work accidents in highway, street and bridge constructions were mentioned. © 2018, International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. Determination of Traffic Impact Level in Urban Cycling
(Konya Teknik Univ, 2025-03-01) Çelik, Osman Nuri; Aydar, Recep
In recent years, the habit of cycling has been increasing. Particularly when active mobility is gaining prominence, there is a global emphasis on healthy living and natural sustainability. Although the current rate of bicycle use in Turkey is quite low, there is significant potential for cycling in metropolitan areas and districts. The concept of bikted (Traffic Impact Level in Bicycle Usage) has been developed to enhance bicycle usage in Turkey, address infrastructure deficiencies, and ensure more comfortable cycling. This method, which consists of parameters related to traffic infrastructure, environmental factors, and user behavior, was evaluated using eight parameters in corridors and five parameters at intersections. In corridors, assessments were made for separated bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, and roads without infrastructure; at intersections, evaluations were conducted for signalized intersections, modern roundabouts, and intersections with traffic markings. In corridors; slope, noise level, curbside parking, vertical marking, surface vibration amount, main road-side road intersection situations, speed limit and bicycle-vehicle gap distance were examined. In intersections; parking at the intersection, intersection visibility, intersection crossing distance, vertical marking presence and bicycle path presence were examined. Additionally, an experimental e-bicycle was developed to aid data collection for bikted. The scoring system in the model was designed using data obtained from field studies and previous literature. For the first time in a bicycle model study, noise intensity, gap distance measurement, slope and vibration were combined for corridor assessment. Slope accounts for approximately one-third of the scoring in corridor assessments for each infrastructure type, and corridors with high slopes cannot reach the \"comfortable use\" classification. The measurements may not be as reliable at intersections as the numerical data analysis conducted for corridors, but they still provide valuable insights for analyzing intersections. This study aims to contribute to the current state of bicycle corridors in Turkey’s traffic infrastructure and future bicycle infrastructure projects, thereby promoting increased bicycle use. Furthermore, bikted is expected to raise awareness among local governments when planning and implementing bicycle-related projects.
