Tunneling in developed and developing countries is now becoming indispensable. Because in many areas of life, the tunnel is now confronted as a structure used by human beings. Today, tunnels can be used for many purposes such as subway, highway, railway, water, sewerage, derivation (in hydroelectric power plants), under the river, immersed tunnel and nuclear waste repository. This study aims to contribute to the development of safer tunneling procedures by determining the parameters affecting occupational health and safety in tunnels. Study design/methodology/approach: Nowadays, two methods are usually used in tunneling, called drilling-blasting and mechanized excavation. However, there are many risks and dangers faced by the workers in the tunneling. Because of the nature of work, the work conditions are very difficult. Hazardous gases in the underground, fire, explosion, roof fall, mudflow, explosive material accidents transport hoisting accident (loading, hauling or hoisting) and machine accidents are the most common cause of work accidents. Besides, it is unfortunately possible to encounter very tragic work accidents that result in mass deaths. A literature search has been made on the safety parameters in tunneling and statistical data have been presented. Findings: In the study, the hazards encountered in tunnels and the related risks were determined and information was presented on the precautions to be taken against the risks. Originality/value: In this study, the procedures to be observed in tunneling and the safety precautions that are essential in terms of work safety are generally explained. The work safety procedures can be changed according to the factors such as the type of tunnel, the opening method, the geology, the equipment used, etc. For this reason, in this study general safety precautions in tunnels are explained. As a result, a summary safety procedure and flow chart for the tunnel has been developed by presenting the procedures that should be paid attention to firms and employees working in tunnels.Conference Object General Outlook and Evaluation of Occupational Accidents in Ankara Metropolitan Municipality(Baski, 2023) Güneş H.; Bilim A.; Bilim N.; Doğaner M.; Bilim, A.; Güneş, H.; Bilim, N.; Doğaner, M.The data obtained from regularly kept records provides great convenience in matters such as efficient work in the workplace and prevention of possible accidents. In addition to threatening the health and living conditions of workers, occupational accidents also negatively impact work productivity and sustainability. In this context, a country-by-country analysis of occupational accidents in the sector is critical to understand local demographic differences better and determine the impact of workplace safety practices. In parallel with the growing economy, the construction sector in T & uuml;rkiye creates a large employment area and stands out as one of the sectors where occupational accidents occur most frequently. This study aims to analyze the interactions of occupational accidents and incapacity with demographic factors in the construction sector in T & uuml;rkiye. This study analyzes the demographic factors, including age, gender, marital status, education, and work experience, of workers involved in occupational accidents within the construction industry between 2018 and 2022. As a result, it is found that young (18-27 years), male, single, and less experienced (1-10 years) workers are more prone to occupational accidents while increasing age and education level increases the risk of incapacity caused by occupational accidents. As experience increases, the probability of occupational accidents decreases; however, the recovery period is longer for workers who are exposed to heavy working conditions for a long time. The results show that the probability and severity of occupational accidents differ according to demographic characteristics. Therefore, high-risk workers should be identified, and occupational safety policies should be restructured based on this data. This study provides an important guide for policy changes and practical applications for demographically oriented restructuring of occupational safety measures in the construction industry.Article Ülkemizdeki Maden Sektöründe Meydana Gelen İş Kazası ve Meslek Hastalıklarının Analizi(2018) Bilim, Niyazi; Dündar, Sertaç; Bilim, AtiyeMadencilik sektörü dünyada kişi başına iş kazası oranlarının en büyük olduğu sektörlerden birisidir. It is widely used in excavation work, mining, construction and many other industries. Excavation work in the mining and construction sectors is carried out for the purpose of extracting or displacing soil, rock or mineral layers for production and structural purposes. In this type of excavation work, different methods are used, such as drilling blasting, mechanized excavation and manual digging. There are many types of excavations, depending on the study area or the nature of the work done. Free excavations in the open, underground excavations, dam and hydroelectric power plant excavations, road excavations, tunnel excavations, stripping, cleaning and shaping excavations and channel excavations (trench excavations) are just some of these excavation types. Excavation work can pose serious risks to workers. These risks can be caused by a variety of factors, including dents, electric shocks, traffic accidents, poisoning, and injury. Excavation works are also one of the activities with the highest number of fatal work accidents in the construction area. For this reason, occupational safety measures are extremely important in excavation works. Since dangerous and risky situations can often be encountered in excavation works, serious consequences may occur if appropriate measures are not taken. Occupational health and safety measures in excavation works are of vital importance to protect the health and safety of workers, to minimize occupational accidents and to provide a safe environment at the work site. Study design/methodology/approach: Occupational health and safety studies are among the important issues of today. The importance of the issue is that it is directly related to loss of life and property. Knowing the dangers and risks that may occur related to the work done is extremely important in terms of taking precautions. In this study, possible hazards that may be encountered in excavation works, occupational accident statistics and precautions to be taken are presented. Findings: It is very important to provide workers with safe working areas at excavation sites and to monitor the use of personal protective equipment. Educating workers on occupational health and safety before and during excavation work enables them to recognize potential risks and hazards. The conscious work of workers plays an important role in protecting themselves and other co-workers from dangers. It is also vital that employers take and implement the necessary measures on occupational health and safety. Employers should promote the use of appropriate occupational safety equipment at excavation sites and ensure that this equipment is provided to workers. In addition, it is necessary to regularly review security measures and update them as necessary. Originality/value: In the construction and mining sectors, where excavation works are carried out intensively and the number of workplaces and employees is constantly increasing, many employees are injured and lost their lives in occupational accidents every year. In recent years, the development and change process that our country has been experiencing in the field of occupational health and safety for the prevention of occupational accidents and losses due to these accidents in these sectors are great importance. It is extremely important to work in this area with the aim of disseminating the culture of occupational health and safety.Article Traffic Safety and Risk Assessment of Konya Districts(Konya Teknik Univ, 2024-12-01) Bilim, AtiyeRoad traffic accidents are a major problem worldwide, causing both loss of life and permanent disability. In order to prevent and reduce these losses and damages, it is very important to determine the causes of traffic accidents. Analyzing the population under the influence of traffic accidents can more realistically reflect the risk situation of the region in terms of traffic safety. The aim of this study is to analyze the situation of Konya districts in terms of traffic safety. For this purpose, the traffic accidents that occurred in 2019-2023 in 28 districts of Konya, excluding the central districts, were examined and the risk situation of the districts in terms of traffic safety was determined by the relative risk ratio. According to the results of the analysis, the districts with high relative risk value were determined as the most risky districts in terms of traffic safety. These districts are Ere & gbreve;li, Karap & imath;nar, Seydi & scedil;ehir, Ilg & imath;n, Ak & scedil;ehir, G & uuml;neys & imath;n & imath;r, Bey & scedil;ehir, Kad & imath;nhan & imath; and Cumra. Yal & imath;h & uuml;y & uuml;k was found to be the district with the lowest risk. It was found that in the districts defined as high-risk, traffic accidents occurred mostly where the speed limit was 50 km/h. The relative risk rate was high in Ere & gbreve;li, Karap & imath;nar, Seydi & scedil;ehir, Ilg & imath;n and Ak & scedil;ehir districts in all the years analyzed. For this reason, the types of accidents in these districts were studied and it was found that the most frequent type of accident was the side-on collision. In addition, it was found that the drivers involved in the most traffic accidents in these districts were drivers between the ages of 18 and 29. Such analyses are an important resource for the creation and implementation of traffic safety policies.
