Assessment of Natural Radioactivity Level of Soil and Water in the Region of Corlu (turkey)
(SPRINGER, 2021-08-18) Manisa, Kaan; Erdoğan, Mehmet; Usluer, Ali; Çetinkaya, Hakan; Işık, Ulaş; Şahin, Latife; Zedef, Veysel
The activity concentrations of Rn-222 with an AlphaGUARD system in well having different depths and in natural spring waters were measured to assess the natural radioactivity level of the corlu region. The measured concentrations varied from 22.04 to 63.92 Bq L-1 for 6 well water samples, 15.38-24.33 Bq L-1 for 6 spring water samples. The activity concentrations from U-238, Th-232 and K-40 in 11 soil samples collected from the same region were also determined and the outdoor gamma dose rates at 1 m above the surface at the same sampling points were measured. The results obtained in this study lie within safe limits recommended by WHO and UNSCEAR with the exception of the mean specific activity of K-40 radionuclide.

    A Geopark Candidate, Bozkır-central Turkey
(Konya Teknik Univ, 2022) Kocak, Kerim; Zedef, Veysel; Kansun, Gursel; Doyen, Adnan
Bozk & imath;r is an old town established on the skirts of the Taurus Mountains, and contain various tectonic units, eg. Bozk & imath;r unit, extending laterally several hundreds of kilometres. The Bozk & imath;r unit typically crops out and hence named around Bozk & imath;r district. It is formed by deep sea sediments, ophiolites and submarine basic volcanic rocks, all of which overlied by well-exposed Paleogene and Neogene? units. Bozk & imath;r is rich not only for its geological occurrence, but also for its culture, history and nature. Bozk & imath;r is in a central position of ancient Isauria and represented by Zengibar castle. The town has also a bridge of Seljuk period and various Seljuk and Ottoman Mosques. & Ccedil;ar & scedil;amba stream, source of the life in the region, is originated from Taurus Mountains both as Ayg & imath;r spring, and as leakage from Sar & imath;ot lake. It crosses from various villages and town up to Mavi Gorge to meet with the water channel. All of which suggest that Bozk & imath;r district should be declared as a Geopark.

Indoor Radon Activity Concentration and Effective Dose Rates at Schools and Thermal Spas of Ilgin
(VINCA INST NUCLEAR SCI, 2020) Erdoğan, Mehmet; Abaka, Murat; Manisa, Kaan; Bircan, Hasan; Kuş, Coşkun; Zedef, Veysel
Indoor radon activity concentrations and radon doses on the ground floor and basement floor of 19 schools (kindergardens, primary schools, secondary schools, and high schools) and thermal spas of Ilgin district in Konya, have been measured using the AlphaGUARD PQ 2000PRO radon detector, for three days in the first half of 2016. According to the results, while the indoor radon concentration for only one location, in total, is above the Turkish action level of 400 Bqm(-3), the values for 10 locations are above the reference level of 100 Bqm-3, recommended by WHO. The calculated annual effective doses for inhalation of the radon in indoor air were also found to be 0.26 mu Sv for the minimum and 4.36 mu Sv for the maximum. The parametric distribution analysis is also performed with 3-parameter Weibull distribution and some remarks are provided on radon concentration activity.

Variations of 222rn Concentrations Over Active Fault System in Simav, Kütahya, Western Turkey: Possible Causes for Soil-Gas 222rn Anomalies
(Elsevier Ltd, 2022-12-01) Manisa, Kaan; Erdoğan, Mehmet; Zedef, Veysel; Bircan, Hasan; Biçer, Aahmet
Soil-gas 222Rn concentrations were investigated on an active Simav Graben/Fault System in Western Turkey. Measurements to understand the causes of variations in soil-gas 222Rn were conducted in three distinct sections such that seven selected measurement points in each section lie on a line that is approximately perpendicular to the main fault line. It was found out in each section that values obtained at two adjacent points were abnormally higher than the rest. The corresponding concentrations were measured as 60.76–63.93 kBq/m3, 33.00–45.78 kBq/m3, and 56.20–84.69 kBq/m3 on the first, second, and third lines, respectively. These values, which differ significantly from measurements conducted on a similar line, are thought to be stemming from crustal stress caused by faulting or acidic-intrusive rocks in the region. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd
