Article Assessment of the State and Impact of Tourism Activities in Kenya(2021) Gündüz, Elif; Agayi, CollinsTourism plays a significant role in the economic development of Kenya. However, the development of the sector continues to face challenges arising, both locally and globally. This study identifies and analyses these problems and how they impact tourism activities. The study provides a brief overview of the role of international tourism by highlighting its socio-economic, environmental, and political contributions to the country's development. Also discussed are the sustainability issues around mass tourism and its effect on the environmental, social, economic, and cultural aspects of life in the host regions. The key to addressing the tourism sector's performance is the understanding of the significant role the market plays. Focusing on this, the study examines emerging issues in the Kenyan tourism sector i.e. seasonality, overreliance on the international market, impacts of tourism infrastructure development on space, among others, and their roles in shaping the tourism industry. It is established that overdependence on the international market exposes Kenyan tourism to global risks that could result in the collapse of the sector, thus negatively affecting the economy. To safeguard the Country from external risks, the study proposes strengthening domestic tourism by encouraging local investors' participation in international tourism. The study also identifies the main problems related to tourism activities in Kenya including; pollution, destruction of cultural heritage, the threat to the health of both human and aquatic life, human-wildlife conflicts, less economic benefits to local communities and host nations dues to dominance by transnational corporations, social ills like drug abuse, luring of young girls into sex resulting into early pregnancy and school drop-out among other problems. The findings of this research are based on a review of previously done research literature, academic documents, government reports, among other secondary and primary sources of data.Article Sürdürülebilir Ulaşımda Bisiklet Kullanımını Engelleyen Sebepler: Manisa Örneği(2020) Öztürk, Serap; Gündüz, ElifManisa, sahip olduğu topoğrafik koşullar ve iklimsel şartlar sayesinde bisiklet kullanımı konusunda Türkiye’dekipek çok kente göre son derece elverişli koşullara sahiptir. Ne var ki, sanayileşme sürecine bağlı olarak gelişen işolanakları sebebiyle aldığı genç nüfus göçüne, üniversite öğrencilerinin varlığına rağmen bisiklet kullanımıkonusunda henüz istenilen seviyeye ulaşamamıştır. Bireysel motorlu araç kullanımına bağlı olarak iş ve okulgiriş-çıkış zirve saatlerinde günlük ulaşımda büyük problemlerle karşılaşılmaktadır. Otomobil kullanımı sonucukentte ulaşım sorunları ve ulaşımdan kaynaklı çevresel, ekonomik ve sosyal sorunlarda giderek atmaktadır.Bisiklet kullanımının artması, sürdürülebilir ulaşım sistemleri için en önemli faktörlerden biridir. Manisakentinin mevcut olanaklarına rağmen bisiklet kullanıcısı olmayan kesimin bisiklet ile ilgili farkındalıklarınıanket çalışması sonucunda belirlemek ve bisiklet kullanımından alıkoyan faktörlerin tespit edilmesi buçalışmanın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem grupta, demografik değişkenlere göre de analizlerin yapılmasıhedeflenmiştir. Yapılan görüşmelerde elde edilen veriler SPSS 22 programı ile analiz edilmiştir. AnalizlerdeANOVA testi, Tukey testi ve T testleri yapılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda bisiklet kullanımını etkileyen başlıcafaktörlerin bütüncül planlama eksiklikleri, fiziki durum ve altyapı eksiklikleri, güvenlik ve kültürel değerler vealışkanlıklara bağlı olduğu tespit edilmiştir.Article Sürdürülebilir Kentsel Ulaşımda Bisiklet Kullanımı ve Kadın; Manisa Örneği(International Social Sciences Studies Journal, 2019) Öztürk, Serap; Gündüz, ElifSürdürülebilir kentsel ulaşımda bisiklet kullanımı henüz gerektiği ilgiyi görememiş, günlük yaşantımızda yaptığımız yolculuklarda ulaşım aracı olarak yerini alamamıştır. Kadınların bisiklet kullanımının toplumdaki eşitsizliği gidereceği düşüncesiyle kent genelinde kadın kullanıcıları etkileyen en önemli faktörlerden olan güvenlik, fizikselçevresel faktörler ve altyapı eksikleri incelenmiştir. Bu makalede hareket özgürlüğünden yola çıkarak 200 yıldır kullanılan bisikletin kadınlara sokakta var olma, otomobil odaklı tasarlanan şehirlere karşı özgür, eşit tasarlanmış sokaklar ve kadın figürü ile kent özelinde ulaşımda bisiklet kullanımının önemi vurgulanmıştır. There is a need for increased diversification of tourism market away from the traditional ones like coastal and wildlife tourism. Over-reliance on mass tourism especially coastal based tourism also has negative degradation impacts on the environment, destruction and exhaustion of tourism products due to overexploitation. The need to improve tourists’ experiences in the destinations has led to increased calls for diversification of tourism products, thus shifting focus to the rural areas. Many potential tourism products like cultural heritage, archaeological sites and the good natural sceneries in rural areas remain unexploited or underexploited. This proposed study aims to deliberate on whether the sustainable development is possible for rural tourism in Kenya. This study examines the existing strategies employed by the Kenya government and other stakeholders in the tourism sectors, to determine areas of weakness that would require interventions. By conducting a SWOT analysis of the tourism potential in Kenya, this paper seeks to identify the untapped tourism potentials in rural Kenya and make necessary proposals for exploitation, to increase the competitiveness of Kenya tourism sector globally. Finally, the research establishes the general challenges facing the tourism sector in Kenya that have or have the potential to limit optimum operation and development in the sector. Rural areas attract attention with their cultural and traditional values instead of sea, sand, sun tourism. This cultural and traditional lifestyle, which develops depending on the diversity of rural agricultural production, adds originality to many areas of life, from clothing to eating and drinking. Local product potentials support regional and rural development. Products with geographical indication registration have a great role in branding, strengthening the image of the region and strengthening regional tourism. In this context, the use of geographical indications in tourism is an important tool for rural development. The reputation and quality of the products registered with geographical indications arouses curiosity about their production methods and culture, and contributes to the revival of tourism by attracting consumers to the region. Thus, tourism in the regional / local area is supported and economic advantages are provided to the region. Rural development that has been correctly designed within a holistic planning approach; It is possible with the proper and correct use of tools such as tourism. Our country has an extremely wide range of local products. Aydın province is one of the provinces with high tourism potential, which has hosted many different civilizations and allows different tourism activities with its rural and coastal areas. However, it cannot provide the expected and sufficient return from tourism. In this study, the concepts related to rural areas, geographical indications and tourism were defined and their relationship with development was tried to be revealed from the perspective of planning. In this direction, a literature review was made by using various written sources such as thesis, article, book, etc. related to the subject and the field. Besides the literature review; It contributed to the study by conducting on-site detection studies for the rural area of Aydın province, oral interviews with the local people and interviews with the relevant public institutions.. Within the scope of the data obtained after the research, various suggestions and strategies have been developed regarding the use of geographical indications in rural development-oriented tourism planning.Article Kırsal Turizm Odaklı Sürdürülebilir Gelişme Stratejilerinin Tespit Edilmesi: Kilistra Örneği(2023) Gündüz, ElifSürdürülebilir bir kırsal canlanma/kalkınma için farklı ihtiyaçları doğru tanımlamak gerekir. Turizm, kırsal bölgelerin kalkınmasına imkân verse de turizmin ve kaynakların sürdürülebilirliği için bölgesel bir yaklaşımla ele alınmasını gerektirir. Turizm ekseninde geliştirilecek kırsal kalkınma stratejilerinin yerel özgün kimlikle uyumlu olması ve yaşanması muhtemel sorunlara doğrudan çözüm getirebilecek içerikte olması gereklidir. Bu stratejilere yönelik kriterlerin belirlenmesiyle, turizm gelişiminin dinamik sürecinde ortaya çıkabilecek farklı durumlara yönelik sorgulamalar daha kolaylıkla yapılabilmektedir. Bu çalışmada Konya-Meram Kilistra ve çevresi örnek alanı özelinde kapsamlı fiziksel, sosyal, ekonomik, tarihi araştırmalar ve tespitler yapılmış ve temel faktörlere uygun olacak biçimde alt ölçütlerle detaylandırılan turizm eksenli kırsal alan geliştirme stratejileri Analitik Hiyerarşi Sistemi (AHS) kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Turizm gelişimi ve kırsal canlanmayı konu alan bir planlama sürecinde en doğru seçeneğin ortaya konulması hedeflenmiştir. Sonuçlardan yola çıkılarak oluşturulacak müdahaleler; bölge bütününde ekonomik ve sosyal canlanmayı sağlayabilecek, kırsal dokunun korunması, bölgede yaşanabilirlik düzeyinin artırılması, cazibe noktaları haline getirilmesi ve koruma kullanma koşullarını düzenlemeye yönelik değerlendirilmesine olanak sağlayacaktır.Master Thesis Kırsal Miras Değerleri Bağlamında Koruma Stratejilerinin Geliştirilmesi: Kilistra Örneği(Konya Teknik Üniversitesi, 2024) Baysal, Evindar; Gündüz, ElifKırsal miras, kırsal alanlardaki geleneksel yaşamın ve yerel ekonominin ön planda olduğu, doğal ve yapılı çevrenin kültürel bir bağla daima etkileşimde bulunduğu, kendine özgü sosyokültürel özellikler sergileyen ve korunması ve yaşatılması önem arz eden bir miras türüdür. Bu nedenle kırsal mirasın bileşenleri incelenmiş, kırsal mirası koruma sorunları belirlenmiştir. Kilistra yerleşimi; taşıdığı arkeolojik ve tarihi koruma alanlarının yanında geleneksel kırsal dokunun hâkim olduğu, sosyokültürel ve ekonomik özellikleri ile kırsal miras değerlerinin yansıtıldığı, günümüze kadar korunarak gelebilmiş kırsal bir yerleşim olması dolayısıyla çalışma konusu olarak seçilmeye değer bulunmuştur. Yerleşimin, sahip olduğu kırsal miras değerleri, doğal ve kültürel miras bileşenleri kapsamında araştırılmıştır. Saha çalışmalarında yapılan analizler ve yüz yüze görüşmeler sonucunda elde edilen bulgular incelenmiş ve korunması gerekli doğal ve kültürel kırsal miras değerleri belirlenmiştir. Kilistra kırsal miras değerlerinin bütüncül bir yaklaşımla ele alınması ve geleneksel dokusunun koruması gerektiği, yerleşmenin koruma sorunlarında çeşitli demografik, ekonomik ve yönetimsel faktörlerin etkili olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Yaşam kalitesini arttırmaya ve hem sosyal hem de fiziksel kalitesini korumaya yönelik stratejiler geliştirilmesi gerektiği ortaya konmuştur. Çalışmada, yerleşimin sahip olduğu potansiyeller ve sorunlar ayrı ayrı değerlendirilmiş, koruma-kullanma dengesi gözetilerek kırsal mirası korumaya yönelik öneriler getirilmiştir.
