Article Accessibility Analysis of Urban Green Space: the Case of Erbil City(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2023) Kemec, Serkan; Salar, Hassan AbdalkarimUrban green areas are open spaces in urban areas that are mainly covered by vegetation. They can be public or private urban green spaces that include parks, community gardens, forests, and nature reserves. Parks are an important component of urban quality of life if they are well designed and accessible. Accessible parks contribute to physical activity among urban residents. Therefore, the objective of the study was to identify the most significant main accessibility factors that discourage the use of public urban green areas, and examine the extent to which they influence the use of green areas in residential areas of the city of Erbil. This study was conducted in 2017 and 2020 to measure the accessibility of green spaces using network analysis with GIS for Erbil city. The present study represents the first known investigation regarding the accessibility of public green spaces within the city of Erbil. The results show that for community parks, 68% of the population has access with a travel time of 5 minutes, 99% of the population has access with a travel time of 10 minutes, and 100% of the population has access with a travel time of 15 minutes. For district parks, 70% of the population had access with 5 minute drive time. With 10-minute drive time, 96% of the population had access and 100% of the population had access with 15-minute drive time. For neighborhood parks, the results show that 43% of the population had access with 5-minute walk and, 71% of the population had access with 10-minute walk. At 15-minute walk time, 80% of Erbil residents had access to neighborhood parks. Mini parks were accessed by 22% of the population with a 5 minute walk and they were accessed by 52% of the population with a 10 minute walk. With a 15 minute walk, mini parks were accessible to 70% of the population.Article An Architectural Self - Criticism: the Accessibility Analysis of Berlika Park Swimming Pool(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2016) Demirkan, ÖzlemUrban designers and architects have to clearly understand the physical features and needs of the people they are designing for. In the designing process fields such as anthropometry, biomechanics, ergonomics, biology and physics require scientific verification to architects. But it can easily be forgotten that there are physically-challenged persons. All users experience any place by using their ability to move and perceive. If designers don’t take into account the special circumstances in the design process for physically-challenged persons, the accessibility of the place becomes impossible. At the same time a sustainable and an accessible place is truly a sign of urban rights being recognized. In this context, human rights are not only important for disciplines such as law, sociology, psychology and political sciences but also they must be important for design disciplines such as architecture, urban and interior design. This research based on the rights to exercise for physically-challenged persons aims to analyze the accessibility of the place. I was a member of the design team and today an active user of the facility-Berlika Park Swimming Pool-chosen for this study. Photographs were taken of different areas of the facility not compliant with TSE standards -TS9111 - TS 12576. Within this context, the structure was examined in terms of mobility constraints under the titles of accessible route, the arrangement of immediate surroundings of the building, arrangement of the entrance of the building, arrangement of the accessibility inside the building, signs, elevators, and fire emergency alert systems. The problematic areas of the building were identified and analyzed. This research aims to make the building more accessible place and a new modification project is being planned. But it is necessary to examine the building or the environment during its design process and solve the problems without the need of renovation project. The design standards for everyone should be considered in the contracts. At the same time, the accessibility plates should be asked from the architects.Article An Awareness Experience by Empathic Design Method in Architectural Design Education(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2021) Şenyiğit, Özlem; Yılmaz, NurPurpose In architectural education, the most important outcome aimed for architect candidates to acquire is the ability to show empathy. This study focuses on designing for users who have special physical needs while addressing the concept of establishing empathy together with universal designing principles in architectural education. Design/Methodology/Approach The empathic design method has been selected as the method of this study. As part of the study, it is aimed for students to offer a design solution in which they would fictionalize a universal design concept together with the empathic design which grounds on universal design principles. Findings As a result of the study, it was observed that when given a key method during the design process, students could approach the design with different points of view and interpret the datum with different approaches. Research Limitations/Implications This study, as part of the Çukurova University Department of Architecture Interior Design class, students were asked to implement interior design projects using the empathic design method with user groups of their choice in terms of characteristic and age range following the empathic design process. Social/Practical Implications It is to develop the awareness of architecture students in the creation process and such studies with different approaches and models to develop their perspectives. Originality/Value To increase the prevalence of accessibility and the participation of the disabled in society, the empathic design method can be foreseen to be a key method in other studies in architectural education.Article The Concept of ' in Architecture as a Power and Ideology Problem(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2016) Saltoğlu, Selma; Aydın Öksüz, AysunThe concept of disability, which is well accepted around the world and seem to be a statement of positive discrimination at first, requires to become a current issue as an equality problem in architecture and society today. In fact, the definition of disability and its intellectual basis are major and still invisibile obstacles to obtain equal rights for everyone regarding architectural accessibility and participation in social life. In this study, the intellectual basis of the concept of disability in social understanding has been explored to identify the main problem. It has been realised that this understanding, which is to be seen also in architectural practices, has occured as an issue of power and ideology. On one hand, the society itself generates the definitions, classifies people and creates hegemony based on consent, and on the other hand speaks up for resolving the problems caused by this classifications with a total inactivity. Strong ideologies, which ignore the problems of existing definitions, forms absolute truths and minds unable to question. Therefore, the definition of “disabled” becomes approved by the entire society, although it does not include inseperable parts of society such as children, patients or elderly. These ideologies result in a communal power created by free will insted of enforcement. In this manner, even individuals classified as “disabled” accept the legitimacy of this authority. However, existing of such an accepted definiton causes otherizing and ignorance in society. It also affects architectural perception and plays a significant role in creating isolation projects such as “disabled-friendly houses” or “libraries for disabled”. These projects show that people defined as “disabled” are the dark subconsciousness of society willing to be forgotten. When it is realised that the unity of differences creates the society, the classification will be forgotten, environments and mentallities will be shaped accordingly and designs will be created for everyone instead of designing for disabled. Bringing an accurate and fair point of view into existence, which is based on the mentioned facts, is the only way to solve the current problems in architectural practices and social inequalities.Conference Object The Effects of Transport Improvements on Economy and Development: a Research in Example of Konya High-Speed Rail(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2020) Gonzalez , Jonatan; Karakayacı, ÖzerIn the last two decades, a major question in “Economic Geography” has experienced that growth of regions is related to the scale and nature of transport infrastructure’s contribution to the broader economy. Since the effects of transport infrastructure investments has sought to go beyond direct benefits resulting from the reduction in transport costs, understanding of the general economic effects generated by changes in transport infrastructure quality has taken on greater importance. However, it has not been possible to reach a general consensus on the typology, magnitude and way of the mechanisms that operate in this relationship, although theoretical and practical discussions coincide with affirming the existence of causal mechanisms between transport infrastructure and economic activities. This causal relationship may have different economic effects due to the variability of the other factors that define the particular economic behaviour of each geographical area. Upon on an accessibility approach, this paper aims to identify and analyze the effects of transport infrastructure investment in economic growth at regional level in Turkey. In this study, Konya High Speed Rail (KHSR) providing fast access to and from major metropolises such as Ankara and Istanbul has been chosen as the case study since Konya has experienced significant economic developments, together with the high speed train connection.Article The Evaluation of The Perceptibility and Accessibility: The Case of Gaziantep(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2020) Günaydın, Ahmet Salih; Yücekaya, MuratPurposeThe study focuses on accessibility to green spaces. In this context, the study aims to determine the accessibility of green areas in metric and topological terms, and to examine and discuss their social and functional contributions.Design/Methodology/ApproachThe study was designed in 5 stages. In the first phase of the study, a convex area map was formed within the limit of accessibility based on the literature research. In the second phase, the axial map was created. In the third phase, the integration map was used to determine the visual perceptibility of the green areas within the study area. The Depthmap software was used in analysis and creation of the maps. In the fourth phase, all findings obtained are explained and discussed with detailed graphics and maps. In the last phase of the study, some suggestions regarding the study area and general spatial planning approach were developed in the light of scientific principles in order to ensure urban green areas' contribution to the city and residentsFindingsAll analysis results were evaluated in a holistic manner and the spatial relationship between residential areas and green areas in the study area was found to be weak and the perception of green areas was moderate.Research Limitations/ImplicationsFurther studies should be conducted to evaluate the accessibility of several parks of different sizes with other various methods. In the study, accessibility values were obtained with the Space syntax method. These values can be compared to each other with other analysis methods.Practical ImplicationsThis analysis will enable issues such as park locations in city plans, their size, and intervals to be more professionally handled. Thus, living space conditions and indirectly cities will be improved. As a result, urban life quality will flourish.Social ImplicationsUrban green spaces are important components of the city in that they contribute positively to urban residents in terms of environmental, social, economic etc. aspects. For this reason, it is extremely important for people to have easy access to parks for socialization purposes.Originality/ValueIt is considered that examining accessibility with the space syntax method, unlike other conventional methods, adds an important value to the study.Article A Picturesque View To Able-Bodied Persons in the City and the Stigma of Disability(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2016) Polat, ErkanToday, in Turkey, the percent of the disabled is %12. Thus, there are 10 million disabled people and when you take the disabled into account with their families half of the Turkish society is affected directly from disability. In addition to that, if we take elders, pregnant, children, obsesses and very tall or short persons who suffer from a kind of temporary or permanent disability into account, we face an incredible situation. These people in city who are limited in terms of motion feel the necessity of design approaches which minimize physical and spatial hindrances in order to travel and wander around in a safe way in places. In addition to the accessibility of the physical environment by the disabled, environmental factors being the cause of disability is quite significant in terms of urban spaces. In this paper, what cities of Turkey, urban planning and design offer to the disabled and what they do not is being investigated, in particular and in general, what is attainable by the help of a universal and inclusive design and universal and inclusive planning to reach a universal, accessible, livable, usable, fair and inclusive city.Article A Study On Accessibility Of Disabled People: Case For Kızılay Shopping Center, Ankara(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2019) Ulvi, HayriAlthough legal arrangements have been made about accessibility in Turkey, their reflection the urban spaces have been inadequate. Accessibility is an issue that needs to handle at different scales to improve the quality of life of every individual disabled or not. Analyzing many studies, it is observed that the disabled people in the society have difficulty in either inside of place or outside of place accessibility. It is among the most important accessibility problems that the design of the place with standard measures that will increase the accessibility of individuals is ignored. In order to draw attention to the planning and design criteria on the accessibility of place, it is aimed to determine the accessibility of the space by analyzing compliance with standards in Ankara Kızılay shopping center case area. Within the scope of the study, accessibility criteria in the study area are evaluated by using an accessibility monitoring and inspection form for buildings prepared by the Ministry of Family and Social Policies General Directorate of Disabled and Elderly Services. As a result of the evaluation, it is revealed how accessible the components that affect the availability of Kızılay AVM. According to this study, there is no usage area with very poor accessibility level. Parking has poor accessibility level. The use of emergency and building installation elements is at the medium level of accessibility. Perceptible walking surface signs and building entrances have good accessibility levels. The other usage areas of the shopping center are horizontal and vertical circulation in the building, toilets and orientation and markings are very well accessible. The importance of this study is the answer to the question how accessible the social activity area for all in Kızılay, which is developed as the central business area of Ankara over the accessibility criteria according to legislation.Article Wheelchair Users’ Accessibility Problems in Public Transportation-Case of Metro Bus(Konya Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Design, 2014) Evcil, Ayse Nilay; Yalçın Usal, S.SelhanEvery day, in urban areas, the mobility of people and goods forms inner urban transportation. When urban transportation is carried in the form of public transportation, it becomes a public service. The urban public transport is one of the important services for all citizens since it is a public service provision. This service is provided by local government and it has been offered as a service without any distinctions between young, old, children, men, women, disabled, employee or retired or briefly to the society. Additionally, traffic congestion and the expence of owing and maintaining vehicles increase public transport usage in cities.
