Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 36Measurement of Energy Correlators Inside Jets and Determination of the Strong Coupling Αs<(Amer Physical Soc, 2024) Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Zhokin, A.Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample of root s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb(-1). The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom. By comparing the ratio of the measured three- and two-particle energy correlator distributions with theoretical calculations that resum collinear emissions at approximate next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to a next-to-leading-order calculation, the strong coupling is determined at the Z boson mass: alpha(S)(m(Z)) = 0.1229(-0.0050)(+0.0040), the most precise alpha(S)(m(Z)) value obtained using jet substructure observables.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 26Measurement of the Inclusive and Differential Higgs Boson Production Cross Sections in the Decay Mode To a Pair of Tau Leptons in Pp Collisions at Root S=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationMeasurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections of the Higgs boson are presented, using the tau lepton decay channel. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, jet multiplicity, and transverse momentum of the leading jet in the event, if any. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1. These are the first differential measurements of the Higgs boson cross section in the final state of two tau leptons. In final states with a large jet multiplicity or with a Lorentz-boosted Higgs boson, these measurements constitute a significant improvement over measurements performed in other final states.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 21Measurements of the Electroweak Diboson Production Cross Sections in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=5.02 Tev Using Leptonic Decays(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Gürpınar Güler, Emine; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationThe first measurements of diboson production cross sections in proton-proton interactions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV are reported. They are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb(-1). Events with two, three, or four charged light leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state are analyzed. The WW, WZ, and ZZ total cross sections are measured as sigma(WW) = 37:0(-5.2)(+5.5) (stat)(-2.6)(+2.7) (syst) pb, sigma(WZ) = 6.4(-2.1)(+2.5) (stat)(-0.3)(+0.5)(syst) pb, and sigma(ZZ) = 5.3(-2.1)(+2.5)(stat)(-0.4)(+0.5) (syst) pb. All measurements are in good agreement with theoretical calculations at combined next-to-next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics and next-to-leading order electroweak accuracy.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 12Observation of Enhanced Long-Range Elliptic Anisotropies Inside High-Multiplicity Jets in Pp Collisions at √s=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2024) Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Zhokin, A.A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1). Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar < 1.6. Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles' azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations (Delta phi* and Delta eta*) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles' eta*, phi* are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet chargedparticle multiplicity up to N-ch(J) approximate to 100. Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for vertical bar Delta eta*vertical bar > 2. For low-N-ch(j) jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v(2)*, is observed to decrease with N-ch(j). This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v(2)* emerges at N-ch(j) greater than or similar to 80, hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum.Article Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 24Observation of the B-C(+) Meson in Pb-Pb and Pp Collisions at Root S(nn)=5.02 Tev and Measurement of Its Nuclear Modification Factor(Amer Physical Soc, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationThe B-c(+) meson is observed for the first time in heavy ion collisions. Data from the CMS detector are used to study the production of the B-c(+) meson in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, via the B-c(+) -> (J/psi -> mu(+)mu(-))mu(+)nu(mu) decay. The B-c(+) nuclear modification factor, derived from the Pb-Pb-to-pp ratio of production cross sections, is measured in two bins of the trimuon transverse momentum and of the Pb-Pb collision centrality. The B-c(+) meson is shown to be less suppressed than quarkonia and most of the open heavy-flavor mesons, suggesting that effects of the hot and dense nuclear matter created in heavy ion collisions contribute to its production. This measurement sets forth a promising new probe of the interplay of suppression and enhancement mechanisms in the production of heavy-flavor mesons in the quark-gluon plasma.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 13Probing Charm Quark Dynamics Via Multiparticle Correlations in Pb-Pb Collisions at Root S(nn)=5.02 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationMultiparticle azimuthal correlations of prompt D-0 mesons arc measured in Pb-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV. For the first time, a four-particle cumulant method is used to extract the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (v(2)) of D-0 mesons as a function of event centrality and the D-0 transverse momentum. The ratios of the four-particle v(2) values to previously measured two-particle cumulant results provide direct experimental access to event-by-event fluctuations of charm quark azimuthal anisotropies. These ratios are also found to be comparable to those of inclusive charged particles in the event. However, hints of deviations are seen in the most central and peripheral collisions. To investigate the origin of flow fluctuations in the charm sector, these measurements are compared to a model implementing fluctuations of charm quark energy loss via collisional or radiative processes in the quark-gluon plasma. These models cannot quantitatively describe the data over the full transverse momentum and centrality ranges, although the calculations with collisional energy loss provide a better description of the data.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 29Search for Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Interactions of the Top Quark and Higgs Boson in Final States With Two Photons in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationProton-proton interactions resulting in final states with two photons are studied in a search for the signature of flavor-changing neutral current interactions of top quarks (t) and Higgs bosons (H). The analysis is based on data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1.) No significant excess above the background prediction is observed. Upper limits on the branching fractions (B) of the top quark decaying to a Higgs boson and an up (u) or charm (c) quark are derived through a binned fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum. The observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limits are found to be 0.019% (0.031%) for B(t -> Hu) and 0.073% (0.051%) for B(t -> Hc). These are the strictest upper limits yet determined.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Search for Fractionally Charged Particles in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2025) Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Zhokin, A.A search is presented for fractionally charged particles with charges below 1e, using their small energy loss in the tracking detector as a key variable to observe a signal. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions collected at root s = 13 TeV in 2016-2018 at the CERN LHC. This is the first search at the LHC for new particles with a charge between e/3 and 0.9e, including an extension of previous results at a charge of 2e/3. Masses up to 640 GeV and charges as low as e/3 are excluded at 95% confidence level. These are the most stringent limits to date for the considered Drell-Yan-like production mode.Article Citation - WoS: 30Citation - Scopus: 42Search for Long-Lived Particles Decaying in the Cms End Cap Muon Detectors in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationA search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in decays of standard model (SM) Higgs bosons is presented. The data sample consists of 137 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, recorded at the LHC in 2016-2018. A novel technique is employed to reconstruct decays of LLPs in the end cap muon detectors. The search is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decay modes and to masses as low as a few GeV. No excess of events above the SM background is observed. The most stringent limits to date on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to LLPs subsequently decaying to quarks and tau(+)tau(-) are found for proper decay lengths greater than 6, 20, and 40 m, for LLP masses of 7, 15, and 40 GeV, respectively.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 7Search for Resonances Decaying To Three W Bosons in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Güler, Yalçın; The CMS CollaborationA search for resonances decaying into a W boson and a radion, where the radion decays into two W bosons, is presented. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb???1 recorded in ffiffiproton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at p s 1/4 13 TeV. One isolated charged lepton is required, together with missing transverse momentum and one or two massive large-radius jets, containing the decay products of either two or one W bosons, respectively. No excess over the background estimation is observed. The results are combined with those from a complementary channel with an all-hadronic final state, described in an accompanying paper. Limits are set on parameters of an extended warped extradimensional model. These searches are the first of their kind at the LHC.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 5Search for Soft Unclustered Energy Patterns in Proton-Proton Collisions at 13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2024) Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Zhokin, A.The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics. With no observed excess of events over the standard model expectation, limits are set on the cross section for production via gluon fusion of a scalar mediator with SUEP-like decays.Article Search for the Z Boson Decay To Ττμμ in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2024) Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Druzhkin, D.The first search for the Z boson decay to tau tau mu mu at the CERN LHC is presented, based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1). The data are compatible with the predicted background. For the first time, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level of 6.9 times the standard model expectation is placed on the ratio of the Z -> tau tau mu mu to Z -> 4 mu branching fractions. Limits are also placed on the six flavor-conserving four-lepton effective-field-theory operators involving two muons and two tau leptons, for the first time testing all such operators.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Searches for Pair-Produced Multijet Resonances Using Data Scouting in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2024) Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Zhokin, A.Searches for pair-produced multijet signatures using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 128 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV are presented. A data scouting technique is employed to record events with low jet scalar transverse momentum sum values. The electroweak production of particles predicted in R-parity violating supersymmetric models is probed for the first time with fully hadronic final states. This is the first search for prompt hadronically decaying mass-degenerate higgsinos, and extends current exclusions on R-parity violating top squarks and gluinos.
