Study deMgn/methodology/approach: Two difterent k>w-quality clays defıned as non-enriched'non-fıltered. non- selective mining clay and lower price ıhan bulk clinker was used by 30% of the total weight of the binder as well as limestone (15%) and gypsum (5%). Raw materials including clay, limestone and gypsum were ground from size of around 100 mm to a powder size of <73 pm. Difterent types of clays were calcined at 700 °C. LC ’ mixtures having 50% reduced clinker content were produced and tested at difterent curing ages. The workability and mechanical properties of difterent LC3 mortars were evahıated and results were analyzed with the individual thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the difterent types of clays. The comparison was made with respect to enriched.'fıltered high alumina-bearing kaolin clay used in LC3 mortars in addition to ordinary Portland cement (PC) mortars having ratios of water/cement/sand by 0.5:13. Findings: Findings reveal that mixtures bearing low-quality clays tend to have water-retaining behavior resulting in reduced flow properties although the type of clay is influential. One type of low-quality clay having higher kaolinite content yielded higher mechanical strength for LC3 mortars, while the other type of low-quality clay comprising fine dust silica lowered the mechanical properties of LC3 mortars in comparison to PC mortars. İt is worth noting that LC3 mortars bearing enriched/fıltered high alumina kaolin clay were found to have betler mechanical properties ıhan PC mortars at ali curing ages. Originality/value: Although a one-size-fıts-all design is not yet possible for LC3 mixtures, the use of low^uality clay sources may multiply the sustainability credentials of Portland cement materials by limiting clinker production.
